My lp playback has a severe left channel skew. I bought this cartridge on audiogon a couple years ago. My system is unconventional since I use purevinyl and a digital interface. But I can't help but think this cartridge is the problem. How common is a serious channel imbalance? Something structural? I think i need fo send it to soundsmith.
Follow Ups:
The S1 should have very good channel matching to within 1dB. I have the 304 and the channel output matching is within 0.2dB.
What is the magnitude of the mismatch?
Also are you using a unipivot arm or one with a gimbal bearing?
Is the cantilever skewed? If you don't align to the cantilever itself (i.e you align the body only to the protractor), then you will possibly notice a channel output imbalance (as well as increased distortion at certain positions on the record!)
Azimuth would be the first thing to check, particularly if you are using a unipivot and haven't confirmed that the arm has been correctly rotated during use to ensure perpendicularity of the tip. If the error is large that would suggest possibly something simple like channel gain mismatch (a driver related setting on your computer?). YOu are using an Apple so can't offer any more advice on the software side.

Proper cartridge alignment/setup?

Reverse channel leads on the cartridge, if the channel imbalance switch sides it is your cartridge.
Have you been able to audition its analog output, or are you hearing it only through your digital interface? If the latter is true, perhaps you should run a test to be sure the problem is with the cartridge and not something downstream, like even a bad IC. Also, does this cartridge have a history in your hands of performing normally, or is this straight out of the box?
If you can be sure the cartridge is faulty or has become faulty, I agree you might send it to SS at least for an examination.
