In Reply to: RE: Why Does The Denon DL-103/103R Sound So Magical? posted by AudioSoul on June 20, 2017 at 17:57:06
I've got a very old broken 103D, and I agree it was a great cartridge for the bucks. I think it remains a great value because Denon is one of the larger Japanese companies that remains in the home audio/video business, and they can afford to market it at the price. Much like Audio Technica also makes great stuff for relatively low dollars.
However, IMO there many other cartridges in the "under $1000" category that for another person with a different system and a different set of goals might be an as good or better choice. Also, some of those very expensive cartridges are actually good. Not all, but some.

But can you get a better choice for $300. there lies the rub....
The rub is the idea that the 103 is the best available. Sure, its great for $300. The magic is the cheap price and value. But I wonder how much magic would be found in the 103 if the price were raised to $1K?

You paid HOW MUCH for that electrical receptacle?!!! Are YOU nuts?
more hifi demands would be made of it, no doubt. This only serves to highlight its achievements both in its price range, and absolutely as an accomplished performer and deliverer of the beauty of the midrange.
I really wish Denon offered an official re-tipping service. I suspect prices are kept relatively low in lieu of this.

"... only a very few individuals understand as yet that personal salvation is a contradiction in terms."
Certain vintage MM or MI cartridges might meet the criteria, but now that word is out regarding their excellence, most are trading at prices between $300 and $600, if in excellent functional condition.
It was relatively cheap, but I'd sure guess I paid more for it than the seller did - a certain Mexican you're acquainted with :-)
My own LPM320STRIII gets a lot of playing time. It's a remarkably great cartridge. I would even say I love it, even compared to my LOMC cartridges costing thousands. I credit the person who sold yours to you with bringing Acutex and many other vintage brands to my attention. I think I paid around $250-$300 for mine, but I do realize that his thread has raised prices for all of us.
I would not describe it as *magical*. But this is the fist sub 300$ MC cart I am enjoying actually!
It's not perfect but I can forgive many things for the money and it suits me better for my sonic priorities and probably my tone arm, too.
