Vinyl Cut Of The DayGil Melle - TOME VI (Blue Quazar)

Thanks ASHRA; another nice find from your LP library. I found this mid-1950's pressed Gil Melle Blue Note, shown in the attached photos, to have that wonderful big rich and full dynamic sound common to the several 1st edition Blue Note mono LPs I have been lucky to hear. As expected from a 1950's Blue Note the performance was excellent.
Interesting details about Melle from his Wiki page:
"It was Melle who introduced engineer Rudy Van Gelder to Alfred Lion, the Blue Note Records founder, in 1952."
"In the 1950s, Melle's paintings and sculptures were shown in New York City galleries and he created the cover art for albums by Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins."
"Melle played the tenor and baritone saxophone with George Wallington, Max Roach, Tal Farlow, Oscar Pettiford, Ed Thigpen, Kenny Dorham and Zoot Sims, and led a number of sessions recorded for the Blue Note and Prestige labels between 1953 and 1957."
Nice... Finding early Blue Notes is mostly a fantasy for me these days. That one does have some nice music.
Couldn't find Spellbound in YouTube unfortunately. Is that the one penned by Miklos Roza?
Thanks!

ASHRA. Finding early mono Blue Notes in the wild likely is rare occurrence for everybody--at least those that don't cost a king's ransom. But yeah, I got lucky with this one and another Gil Melle 10" Blue Note all found at an estate sale. I had not noticed until you inquired but another yeah as the Spellbound cut was composed by Miklos Roza.I freaked out at an estate sale several years ago while perusing a wide shelf full of LPs the person to my left pulled out a bunch of original Blue Notes and other early jazz LPs. All quite clean and lovely. A buck a pop. Of course that was a once in a lifetime experience.
Keep on posting those album cover photos!

Wow, thanks so much, never knew this existed until your post. Listening to the YouTube feed now. Great stuff.
I've been a fan of his early work from the 50s for awhile, and have some of his Blue Note 10" albums (Japanese reissues) BN 5033, 5054, 5063. Extremely creative given the time of the recording. Not your standard early-mid 50s hard bop.
