The discontinued VPI Traveller was the outstanding value at that price point. The Player at the same price is not as good, although it packs a lot of value for the money.
I don't really care for the Pro-ject, Rega, and Music Hall models at $1500. ClearAudio no longer has anything at this price level. Even the Sota Moonbeam is nearly up to $1500.
This used to be the entry-level point for a high-end turntable, but now I would say it is more like $2500. There you could look at the ClearAudio Concept, the Pro-Ject RPM 9, and the VPI Scout.
Follow Ups:
I was able to land a used Music Hall MMF9 for under $1500..... Extremely happy with this turntable/arm.
On the other hand, the used market should turn in some real gems at that price, particularly direct drive transcription decks and hefty semi autos
I'm happy I bought my Scout when it was $1650 and Benz Ace when it was $400 (though I've since upgraded the Ace, it lasted a good long time). That same set up, then $2050, now would be over $3,000, albeit both the cartridge and the table/arm have been upgraded.
