I am looking for a recording of the traditional, chanted Requiem liturgy, not Mozart, Victoria, Faure, etc, beautiful as they are.
Any recommendations?
Follow Ups:
If anyone else is interested, I picked up a copy of Columbia Masterworks M3X 32329 on eBay.
Title: Gregorian Chant
Artist: Schola Cantorum of Amsterdam students
Conductor: Wim van Gerven
It is a 3 LP set, with selections from throughout the liturgical year (Advent, Christmastide, Passiontide, Eastertide, Pentecost, and the Requiem for All Souls).
I have only listened to the Requiem so far, but it beautiful. They also have a selection of hymns from the Office of the Dead on the reverse side.
Definitely worth a listen.
A google search indicates that the earliest Requiem Masses were in the 15th century. I don't know of any recordings of these early works, but there is certainly a lot of early music out there that would be similar.
Enjoy,
Jim
Those would be polyphonic works, like Ockeghem (which is beautiful) but I was looking for a recording of the traditional chanted liturgy, which is much, much older. It would be hard to say how old exactly, but the Introit at least is in the Antiphonary of St. Gregory, which pushes it back to ~ AD 600 or even earlier.
The famous sequence 'Dies irae' is generally believed to be a later addition, usually attributed to Thomas of Celano, ca. 1200, but a few people think it also goes to St. Gregory's days.
The Durufle' requiem is 20th century, but the melodies are adapted directly from plainsong chant. My favorite LP version is the Argo ZRG 787 recording of the St. John's College Cambridge choir under George Guest. The boy soprano singing the Pie Jesu is to die for.
I have looked for a plainsong version of the Missa de Angelis (not a requiem, however) for years and never found one.

No idea if it is any good, but there is exactly one LP with the ordinary of the Missa de Angelis on eBay:

I wish someone would record it as a full Mass with propers; which propers would be up to them. At my parish, the Missa de Angelis (aka, Mass 8) is frequently sung most the year (pretty much from Trinity Sunday to Advent) and I think that is pretty standard (at least to the extent that one can talk about a Missa Cantata being standard these days).
Perhaps someone has for CD, I'll have to search.
Thank you for this information. I am not Roman Catholic, but Anglican, and I sing in a church choir. Our Episcopal Hymnal 1984 has the Gloria and the Sanctus from the missa de angelis, but not the other movements.
In a different church choir 34 years ago I sang the entire mass, but have not been able to locate the vocal score for it. I am sure it is public domain after all the centuries. Our performance years ago used only a few hand bells for accompaniment, to help us stay on pitch. It was a sublime experience.
If you know of a source, I would love to know about it.

Sure! You may have to give yourself a crash course on chant notation ("neumes") but there are guides online.

This is the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. The Credo is variable, but singing either Credo III or Credo I is common with the Missa de Angelis.

Berlioz, Ormandy wiith a Sanctus "to die for"
Google is your friend- and a bit of historical knowledge-
I found the link below- which may suit your needs -
If not, try looking for a Gregorian chant version - I am sure that there is some out there-
You might also see if the holy see has any recordings on their website-
The Verdi version is the most up-beat, but most composers penned music to this mass - if not others parts of the liturgy...

Thanks! In fact, I have that exact recording on CD, as well as several others, and I do have Verdi on CD as well.
I would also recommend the very, very recent recording, from the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, which is beautiful.
But all my recordings are on CD; what I was hoping to find was a good rendition on LP.
Pax.
- Sorry I forgot which forum-
For an LP-
I might look into the back catalog of
Arkiv
Nonsuch
Nonsuch had a few series - the explorer which had some fabulous shkuhachi music- and may well have gregorian chants and the like...
Arkiv - all the arkiv LPs that I have picked up second hand have been fabulous as to SQ and quality-
Happy Listening
