Someone on here nailed it! It totally wasn't inspired by sound. In my dad's more "seasoned" age (that sounds better than older right?) he didn't like dealing with the wobble as much. Especially if he was relaxing and had a bit too much wine. Initially that was the inspiration for the gimbal arm he has been working on. That arm has been exciting and dad has been happy with each advancement but in the end the unipivot sounded better. The dual pivot brought stability to the JMW arm and improved sonic features. Now the other crazy arms dad is working on is just for fun.
Also yes, it works on the JMW 9, it might need a bit of super glue because there isn't much of a surface for the bottom plate to sit on but it works great. Dad originally sent a drilled tonearm to Fremer with a second pivot while I was distracted by getting married to my wife :p

Follow Ups:
I'm looking at images I Googled and it appears the dual pivot is more of an outrigger that drags across a plate that in other arms might be a paddle and trough.
The added friction is a good thing?
Perhaps the 'bearing' is a vibration sink maybe 'improving' the sound but tonearm bearings are a study in reducing friction, n'est ce pas?
Matt.....that sentence is a bit confusing....but in the end the unipivot sounded better....than with the use of the 2nd pivot??
*The Gimbal didn't sound as good as the unipivot. Dad originally made the dual pivot to make handling better, the improved sound was an added bonus and better than the uni.
Gimbal < unipivot < dual pivot :)
