Question 1) Should there be any rattle/play in the bearings? I'm thinking no, but...
Question 1a) What tool would you recommend for unlocking the bearings so one might adjust them?
Question 2) Assuming the bearings are adjusted properly would this arm be adequate for a MC cartridge such as a Dyna 20x2 L or a Hana SL? (BTW, I have now had a chance to compare those two and can offer some insight.)
Thanks very much!
Sam
Follow Ups:
Mine (Hana SH) sounds beautiful. Not citing the tech resonance aspects, I actually am referring to my listening to music and it's way better than my Shure V15VxMR unmodified. Not to say I may not upgrade my 30 year old arm on my 30 year old Linn LP 12.
Are you using the Hana in a Basik or Basik Plus arm?
Thanks.
Linn Basik Plus
Hi
I once adjusted the bearings of a Linn Basik LVX (the detachable headshell version), both the vertical pivots and (gulp!) the horizontal bearings inside the arm pillar. That last effort was 'interesting', shall we say! I did manage to reduce the play in both cases - my example was second-hand anyway.
Amazingly, the arm worked afterwards, with no sticking or other problems. Many years later, it's still in use on my old Systemdek (sold to a friend) and sounds fine. It's only fitted with a Nagaoka MP-11, though, and I'd agree that even the Basik Plus, which is a better arm IMHO, would not be suitable for an MC cartridge.
However, this is one area where YMMV - a lot!

The mass of the Linn is 12.5 grams. The compliance of the Dyna is 12x10 and the weight is 9.2 grams. According to this chart on Vinyl Engine, the resonance frequency is 10 hz. That should be fine. Here is the chart that shows that information!
1) Absolutely not, and mine has no play.
2)A medium flat head screwdriver to unlock the bearings by unscrewing the concentric ring, and then a fine flat head screwdriver to actually adjust the bearings. If you have one of these arms, it should be clear how to do it.
3)Absolutely not. This arm is better than a Rega RB300 when properly fettled, and I have owned 8 of the Regas, but the effective mass is much lower than the Regas. So it works best with a MM cartridge such as Linn, AT or Shure. If you must use a MC, go high compliance with something like the Denon 301, not the 103. The Dyna 20 and Hana will not sound good in this arm, IMHO.
1. No, but this is not a particularly good arm either
1a. It would probably need to go back to Linn, but in my opinion it isn't worth fixing. I have a properly working version of this arm and I found the sound quality to be unacceptable.
2. I have used the 20x2L cart on a Rega RB300 arm with the Incognito rewire on a Vahalla LP12 and the sound was very good at the price point. I wouldn't consider using a MC cart on the Basik arm.
Sorry to be so negative on the Basik arm. While I'm an LP12 fan with a fully upgraded LP12 SE table, Linn doesn't always get it right and the Basik arm was a failure in my opinion.
Enjoy!
Jim
Sorry mate but if you have to ask about the tool to be used to adjust the bearings then you haven't the skills to do it.
BTW Linn never recommended the Basik range for use with mid compliance MC carts as far as I remember.
answer #2 A spanner screwdriver.
