I just ordered a conversion kit for my 3D. I've read lots of comments regarding the 2nd pivot, and all those (even those whose judgement I really respect)...everyone says the sound is improved with the proper installation of this kit. When I exchanged my 10.5 metal VPI arm for the 3D...the increase in performance was quite startling. I expect even better performance from the 2nd pivot....will report back.
re: damping to eliminate wobble....it doesn't - just closes in the sound\
I've read that the 2nd pivot stabilizes the arm...like that of adding cones to the turntable itself..
Follow Ups:
Two weights on two sides of cap ARE damping. A heavy cap as VPI IS damping also. Optimal damping can only enhance the sound. If damping closes in the sound, this kind damping is not correctly implemented.
When talking of VPI damping, I'm thinking of fluid at the pivot point with the metal arms.....never heard good things in its use. I understand Grado's may be helped with this damping, but haven't heard the new Grados with this application.
