The mod was apparently simply to address some users' issues about "wobble" when handling the unipivot. As someone who's had a Morch unipivot for decades wobble complaints about unipivots like VPI's baffle me.
Follow Ups:
Gosh, this looks just like my Graham.
....when I heard a demo at an event. However, perhaps the arm's interaction with low-compliance cartridges is improved.
Aren't unipivots supposed to wobble a little? When I first used a VPI arm many years ago coming from an RB300 the wobble was a bit disconcerting but I don't even notice it any more. Still, the OP's experience is interesting.

Thank you, Marx Brothers!

Why all the negativity? Based on no experience? Crazy.
... I used, and swore by VPI JMW arms ever since the first one was introduced, what, 20 year ago? I ended up with the 10.5i model, 3 armtubes, and (unfortunately) 9 cartridges. It took a good friend who had followed the same path to prove to me that I could better this setup -- in his and my system at least, in our humble opinions -- for a lot less.* While also easily and inexpensively accommodating the nine cartridges.
The "wobble" business never bothered either of us. But this latest bandaid? Yeah, it will no doubt satisfy those users who WERE bothered by it, but its other contributions would seem mostly ... adding a little friction. And no, I'm not planning to find out otherwise.
Sue me :-)
* specifics are in my Inmate Systems listing.
If wobble is really a problem, they should redo their bearing or add silicone damping. A bandage doesn't make sense to me.
The 2nd pivot is incidentally about wobble....it is a sonic step up.
