Has anyone tried the Tranquility Tiger Paw magnetic levitation mod for the LP12 ?
It uses 2 opposing magnets to transfer 90% of the platter/inner platter weight from the bearing to the sub-chassis. One magnet is located around the collar of the bearing well, the other is mounted on the underside of the inner platter. Anecdotal reports are very positive.
Anyone tried it yet ?
Thanks.

Actually it seems a clever contraption.
On the other hand it's ~5/600$.
I can buy 400 or more LPs for that
I'm still wondering how the external fields generated by the opposing magnets can avoid affecting the cartridge. Trying to get my head wrapped around it...
At the same time, are DIY parts readily available? It might be fun to experiment, and not just with a Linn. (A buddy has a Rega - could be adapted to that, too?)
Here's one potential source that came up in a google search:
The intensity of a magnetic field decreases based on the square of its distance from the cartridge. Therefore, it probably has very little impact on the cartridge. Furthermore, it is constant magnetic field rather than an alternating one thereby significantly minimizing its audible effect on the cartridge. For example, an alternating magnetic field from a power supply transformer will result in hum that is noticeable even at very low levels but a constant magnetic field that is very weak is basically inaudible.
Anyway, the proof-of-the-pudding is in listening. If it sounds good then the magnetic field's impact is insignificant.

I haven't looked on that forum for a long time but, I bet, it would be a good place to start. Last time I was there the Tiger Paw machined top-plate was new and being discussed positively.

I discovered the mod in the Linn forum. There is a 76 page thread regarding the matter. Most comments are positive, with a large minority wondering about "tuneism", synergy, and whether or not a possibly minuscule difference in platter height can transform the overall sound of a system. And several comments implying if you don't buy into the whole Linn/Naim personality cult you don't know what you are talking about and should not be allowed to own an expensive system.
I posted here in the hope that I would receive comments written by sensible people in plain English. Don't mean to be churlish, but it seems that each forum has a personality, and the asylum is compatible with mine.
Thanks,
Ross
