i think that a new to audio person that wants to get a starter table should get one with a detachable headshell. a used technics, pioneer, kenwood, sansui, or like table will fo fine.this give the new 'phile a chance to learn about changing cartridges when needed, inspecting the stylus with a handheld stylus microscope of about 30-50X for cleanliness and condition.
the other advantage of this is to buy some additional headshells and another cartridge as well so as to be able to switch carts. they all sound a bit different and if one gets broken, there is another to take its place.
the person will learn not to be afraid of the turntable or cartridge and will develop skills that will serve him well along with acquiring some appropriate tools to do the jobs needed.
buying and changing the belt of a belt drive tt or lubricating the direct drive tt when needed will become second nature. all in all, it will accelerate the capabilities needed for this HOBBY.
...regards...tr
