Howdy all.
I'm looking into a new cartridge for my tt.
I've got a vpi classic.
Using a McIntosh mx110z as pre.
Here's my question-
Do you think I'm better off getting a pricier cart-
Like a soundsmith zephyr or the likes-
I like mc and have been using high outputs
Plugged directly into pre
OR
a cheaper cart- maybe a benz micro or denon
and a phono stage?Love to hear all the thoughts on this.
Edits: 03/30/17Follow Ups:
I got a new HOMC, Hana SH, $750. Plugs into MX 110 directly.
Replaced a Shure V15VxMR stock one, but it was really a marked improvement. It's still improving, having probably played 50 sides only and a few cuts.
Thanks so far guys.
Admittedly I am leaning toward better
Cart right into mx110, but
Maybe secretly was hoping to hear phono stage
Is the way to go. Not sure why.
Would rather spend it on cartridge if I can.

da better da cartridge, da better the sound....
I'm using Denon DL-103, but discovered it only gives its full potential if used with a SUT into the MM phono section. Which may be a limiting move for you (assuming that you're not using SUT).
My recollection is that the McIntosh MX110 has a very good phono section. I would go with the higher output cartridge and use it.
