another ingenious "lifestyle" product. On the shelves of your neighborhood Bed,Bath and Beyond,Barnes & Noble and others...soon!
I guess the novelty is cool? Maybe a no holds barred 'phile version should be considered?
Do these products last long in the marketplace? I just can't imagine how these manufacturers
sustain themselves after maybe a first production run-that's if those are even sold!
Follow Ups:
If they finished the design and placed tonearms on both sides of the platter. That way you could start a LP and listen to both sides before having to change records. The design should include automation via remote control to start, stop, fast forward, skip tracks (via remote) and the automation included the automatic switching of sides when the end of the side has been reached. That would be very cool.

...it was based on Capehart's juke box mechanism. Interesting to watch, but I would not (now, anyway) let it anywhere near any decent records. It also had an AM and FM tuner.

They were a Rube Goldberg type thing but they could be cool to watch.

Something like this?
It would be nice if they concentrated on quality as much as convenience. I'm sure vinylphiles would reject such a monster but it would be nice for longer listening sessions.

Yeah, if you're going to compromise for the sake of convenience, then you might as well just put on a digital rip and at least you can hear audio captured from a decent table.
From one of the several Youtube video descriptions..."True tonesWheel's linear tonearm is built around the beautiful AudioTechnica AT95E cartridge. With our tonearm, the AT95E offers a warm, rich sound, and outstanding clarity and detail. For a perfect match, the entire arm is micro machined out of a single piece of laminated mahogany.By using a single type of cartridge, we can fine-tune each tonearm for damping, resonance and weight distribution to make Wheel sounds its best. Please note: The Modified AT95E cartridge is adjusted for each Wheel and can't be user replaced. The stylus is user replaceable. Replacement styli will be available from the moment Wheel ships."

When I viewed the video, seeing the arm reminded me of a (dramatically) scaled-down version of the sort-of-pantograph arm that was used in the Marantz SLT-12 linear tracker.
If I understand the history correctly, the original SLT-12 shipped with a cartridge that wasn't user replaceable (like this one), but later SLT-12U versions had a replaceable cart.
Seems sort of like history repeating itself, albeit in miniature.
it looks like a linear tracker and i will suppose the cart can be substituted with a higher end one. using a carbon fiber brush may prove to be difficult.
i am sure there are other potential quandaries but perhaps not. if it gets someone to love their vinyl and music, then it can't be all bad.
it is more of a lifestyle product than audiophile, at least for now.

The Kickstarter page states that the AT95E is "modified" for each turntable, and cannot be removed. It's not clear whether the tracking force is adjustable (but I'd guess no), to allow for the use of better replacement stylii.

too kludgey. not for audiophiles then.
...regards...tr
Yeah it reminds me of those cartridge-in-the-lid linear trackers like a Technics SL-5, only flipped around.
I may be wrong, but isn't watching the arm trace across the record part of the visual appeal? I mean, it's cool how they hid it and all but once that wears off it's kinda boring.
i love watching the tonearm traverse the LP but there is something intriguing about not even seeing how the record may be playing. that said, i don't see me buying one for myself.

...I like the way it looks, the way it works and its feature set.
It has an Audio Technica AT95e, so its no barn burner, but it not a POS either.
Very cool.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
It's awesome. I love it.
That's what I call functional art. I like the idea of the full range speakers embedded in the wall too.
Not an audiophile quality product but a heck of a lot cooler than an ld LP made into a clock.
...making fun of this future heirloom? :) My wife bought it for me for Christmas, and I've pretended to like it since. Made out of a Sheena Easton LP, so in this case it's probably a better use of the vinyl.
I much prefer my tube clock. Been going strong for 15 years, and although I have spare tubes for it, I haven't had to replace any yet.
NOT make fun of the clock! :)
And I love that nixie clock. I made one about 7 years ago before I knew enough to install sockets. So it's nice to know the tubes last a long time. I'm not looking forward to de-soldering those tiny little pins!
Love the case you made for it!!
My kit included the case. I could never do that well with plexiglass. :) Mine also has socketed tubes, so when they do go south it'll be easy to replace them. I get more comments on that clock than the tubes and turntable on the other side of the room....
I got a clock made with a record for Christmas.
Before I dropped it, it was a laser cut image of the Abbey Road cover. Amazingly detailed, demolished into bits!
I took something out of junk pile, and put the movement in it.
Well, I have a good record, but a non-functional movement. Perhaps we should get together. :)
It was a terrible moment...
Like an accident, I watched John,Paul,George and Ringo, shatter before my eyes. THE HORROR!
The detail was quite amazing. I never seen anything like it before.
It was given to me by a customer. She keeps asking me to send her a picture of it hanging in my room. I'm running out of reasons for not sending a picture!
Sinead O'Conner just doesn't have the same impact as that Abbey Road laser cut disc.
You have my utmost respect for being able to continue on with life after that. Not many of us have the fortitude and determination required. :)
You may want to consider changing your moniker to brokenvinyl though?
It does have positives as a starter kit.Linear tracker, protected stylus, MM on a recognized fair starter, VTA issues with LP gauge/ thickness resolved, high density wood arm, great for student parties with alcohol, fits in small areas.
Cons the lack of isolation scares the rest of us. At least it is a belt drive but a ceramic bearing or did I misunderstand. Also the AT 95 a bit bright for me. Prefer the Shure 97
Time for more music.

Really like it!
Here is the Miniot kickstarter page .
Sure, it is a lifestyle product. But honestly, could it possibly be worse than a Crosley or other bottom dweller of vinyl playback? It's for people who don't want the hassle or space requirements for a traditional turntable.
I wouldn't want one, but upscale folks in urbal apartments might. The fundraising goal has already been surpassed with lots of time remaining on the clock.
"Life without music is a mistake" (Nietzsche)
Conceptually, I think is a very cool item.
Obviously, someone would be buying one of these for the "experience" as mentioned.I would get one of these over the Crosely, although maybe their "top dog" isn't so bad either.
Likely, with a decent setup, it still sounds more convincing than an equivalent CD arraingment.
I will point to my Nakamichi "Soundspace 5" which I like and I think sounds pretty good considering what it is.
I've been hoping to find something neat to replace it (and i have to say that even after 15 years it's going strong).
AND it's a new speaker project because I've always wanted to try some Lowther full range speakers in an infinite baffle (in-wall) situation.
I doubt it actually sounds very good, but it is a pretty cool design.
Agreed. And the coolness will certainly help sell it.
I wonder how many turntables B&O has sold. Sound quality no better than the $100 dreck at Best Buy, but sold at many, many multiples the price because they were cool. You couldn't be a Yuppie without one, and I'm betting Millenials aren't all that different.
though suspect I'd be disappointed with the performance.
All these "lifestyle" record developments, whether they have legs or not will contribute to the "vinyl resurgence" lasting longer than many had ever anticipated.
So, what's the harm?

"so, what's the harm?"
None, except maybe for the guys who dished out the cash.I'm just curious about R.O.I. with these novelty items. Do you see anything, once the expenses are paid for? Not having marketed a product, just imagining it's hit or miss with something such as this.
There's still back end expenses of getting rid of that production run through retail/e commerce, and that's a gamble.
I guess this stuff is for the visionaries" who can hold their breath while the cash is invested.
Clearly it's not for sound quality, its the "experience"
I don't know what that "experience" is, but...okay.
So you've heard one? You know objectively that it sounds bad?
There isn't a mention of "bad"
Sound quality related to what most are here for...possibly? Hooked up to adequate gear, it would sound sound better than a CD equivalent IMO.
VPI,Rega,SME,Technics,etc,etc.Watch out,your days are numbered!
Had to look that up. ANY investment is somewhat of a gamble.
Anyone incautious enough to invest in most any audio device these days is taking a big chance.
Ask (recently) Neil Young or any of the investors in MQA.
I never have much sympathy for the guys that dish out the cash.
Seems the only smart investment in any audio development these days may be vinyl pressing plants that will help feed
novelty's like this weird TT. Ask Jack White - HE'S a smart guy.
Anyway, it's just a new fangled TT, not the first, not the last and I think the concept is cool.
