The Cellar Door was (is?) a special place. I heard Charlie Byrd a couple of times there back in the 60s and had a lovely conversation with him. Nice guy, great artist, great venue. Them's were the days.
Follow Ups:
probably since before you left the area. However, the Cellar Door Corporation continues to exist and owns Blues Alley, which is itself a club with history. When I was in college in the 60s, I visited DC for my first foray south of the GW Bridge, and we heard Woody Allen do stand-up at the original Cellar Door. At that time, he was "Woody Allen", not yet "WOODY ALLEN".At that corner, there is now a cupcake bistro. Yes, boutique cupcakes.

Yes, Cellar Door just a memory now. Sigh.A little trivia. About a block north-west or so of where the Cellar Door was are the famous Exorcist steps from the movie scene where the priest gets thrown down the long stairs.

AFAIK Byrd only played at the Showboat in D.C. during the 60's (he was part owner). I heard him there with his trio a number of times.
His club was a good venue. Also heard guys like John Handy (great group w/Bobby Hutcherson and Pat Martino), Zoot & Al Cohn, Dizzy's quintet and others at the Showboat.
