Maybe I shouldn’t have been so lenient with the G+ rating. Some of my vinyl is down right poor. But hey, if you don’t have it on any other media, what are you going to do?
Believe me, Im not just anal (as anyone should be with their prized possessions), it's simply a precautionary measure.
Maybe later in life, after my collection has been narrowed down. And I've found better copies of my treasured poor vinyl. Then one cart will suffice. But for now, as I've said, I don't care to ruin a $$$ cart on a beat up Mingus record.
I simply want to hear the VG or better, at their best. And the worst at it's conceivably best.
Thanks

Hi, my anal comment was not specifically aimed at you, more an observation of the general tone of a number of the posts on this subject.I think that you would find it difficult to do serious harm to a cartridge by playing a scratched record. I am not advocating playing any old knackered shit, but if you describe a record as good condition then I dont see why you should worry.
I have a relatively large collection and have been playing records for over 20 years without any damage being done to my cartridge by a record (sadly I've bust a couple while messing). Currently I am using a cartirdge which retails at over $2k and I'm noy worried. Trust this provides some comfort.

I understand what your saying.I guess I can’t help being a bit intimidated by the idea of using a 1K cart on raggedy vinyl.
I plan to invest in a Wally-tracker and scale and all other available instrument’s for whatever arm I choose. I know calibration is the key to a carts survival. I also plan to use my Denon DL103 for starters. Im confident that with time and practice I will get the setup process down.
Im still not set in stone on a table with two arms. Though it would be nice, it also makes for more problems. My pre only has one set of phono inputs. And Im not keen on the idea of putting my fragile phono signals through any type of switch. In fact, (I didn’t want to write this at the risk of controversy), but after buying my tonearm (be it a SME or Graham) I planned to use a single set of cables from the headshell to the pre. I think the minimalist approach is superior (kind of ironic, ya think :). Definitely gonna do a bit more reading before attempting this.
I guess after using the Denon with a garden variety of vinyl, I see how its lifespan goes and decide from there. Its currently unmounted, another long story. Suffice it to say, I have a bit of a history of bad luck and used tables/ebay.
Thanks
:)
