On a non-Linn turntable, which of these tonearms will be preferable ?
Looking for a lively and dynamic tonearm in general. The cartridge will be either a Dynavector 17d3 or EMT TSD-15. The Rega will get a cardas rewiring btw.
I am also checking out the Linn Ekos vs Naim ARO, provided I decide to stretch my budget.
Follow Ups:
I second the Rega if you are looking for dynamics and speed. I would also look at the Audiomods arm if you are going to rewire the 700. It is a superb arm for the money.
It has a different sound than rega. I rewired a rega with Cardas and then counterweighted it with Origin Live and truthfully, the 309 was a big wow. John Ellison might be able to tell you why.
I only know that SME understands how to build tonearms and the Series V, IV, and 300 Series are their best models. Personally, I think they are better than anything else in their respective price ranges.
Best regards,
John Elison
You know whatlease is nice is that the Linn's current EKOS SE. SME makes it per Linn's specs but it sort of feels like a PRATTY version of the V ( which is nicely engineered but a bit of a downer to my ears )
Yeah, it looks like a downer to me. I like the SME V with its vertical bearings at stylus level and its dynamically balanced VTF.
But it has lousy machining and the fit and finish is pretty crude...;8^)).

We don't shush around here!
Life is analog...digital is just samples thereof
You must be talking about a different SME V than I own.
Something like the Mitchell Technoweight is a plus for the arm's low frequency performance.

Opus 104
every time I hear them on something other than a Sondek, it's always wanting.
I know there are enough folks do it but I am not convinced...
EKOS might be had cheaper now that SE is out but i the case of ARO, the second hand price is sort of silly for the performance you get especially on a deck which wasn't intended for.
Thanks Kuma, do you think $1.5k is too silly a price to pay for Aro ?
Secondly which other tonearm would you recommend which has good PRAT, dynamics and tonally natural for under $2k ?
if you can verify it's in a good shape and comes with all the accessories & a box, i'd swing for one.I am still not convinced on the arm on other deck than an LP 12, tho.
Plus, if you want a neutral tonality ( meaning transparency ), ARO is not the right arm for that sort of thing.
Might be better off with a Rega arm or if you can source a Dynavector arm ( I find it neutral, dynamic and is not lead footed ), that will be better asuming it'll work with your whatever the turntable.

Kuma, Dynavector is an interesting proposal but I have couple of questions:
1. Which Dynavector arm are you suggesting, 505 or 507 ? I dont think I can get a 507 under $2k. In that case I am left with 505, how is it ?
2. Is Dynavector suitable mostly with its own cartridges or also with other cartridges ?
3. Most importantly, is it a lively, fast tonearm ? I am looking for something pacey and lively for my Verdier.
505 can be had cheap but then the factory does not supoprt this arm so if something is wrong with it, it could be a pain to fix it.
Dynavector arm can be used with other cartridges but I haven't head one on a 17D.
Verdier? Fancy!
I know nothing of the table so no clues what works with it. At one point I was looking at La Platin but there was no place for me to audition so didn't pursue further.
Hope you'll get some answers from the owners.
As Graham's current arm is the Phantom, I would think you could buy a G2.2 for less than your budget.

Andy
I read at couple of forums where people describe the Graham tonearms to be lean, fast and analytical kinds...is that so ?
I really couldn't say, sorry. All I do know that the combo of non-standard LP12, G2.2 and both Benz LP & Grado RR1, through hot-rodded, active Maggies ... makes beautiful music. :-))Of the many people who have heard my system over the years, not one has said " too lean " or " too analytical ".
Regards,
Andy
PS: Re. kuma's suggestion of a DV507 ... I had a DV505 on my LP12 for over 20 years (sold by the Linn dealer when I bought my LP12, as he considered it to be better than any Linn arm of that day). Great sounding arm but:
* at the upper limit of weight, IMO, for an LP12. Yes, the armboard spring coped ... but I would not use a DV507 if it is heavier than the DV505 (which is almost a pound heavier than the G2.2.
* it has zero azimuth adjustment, and primitive VTA adjustment ... which I eventually got sick of. :-))

Thanks for your replies, really helpful.
How would you compare the sonics of Graham vs Dynavector 505 ?
Sorry, I can't give you a definitive reply as I've had my G2.2 for about 8 years, so have forgotten what the sound of the DV505 was like. (And I made other changes at the time of the changeover.)
Good luck,
Andy
Thanks, will update here whatever I buy.
