Here is the issue. All too many of you/us consumers (and not just in the USA but most of the western world) are bitchy about price of things. Walmart parking lots are full of mindless consumers who spend thousands of dollars per year buying crap. Not just the cheapest stuff, but crap they/we have little to no need nor really wanted to buy anyways.
We have been and get brainwashed to shop, shop, shop and also on the flip side to bitch if something is $1.00 more than we each think it should be. We then bitch about lost manufacturing jobs while we load up out fat, lazy a$$es into our typically over sized vehicles to get down to mostly the now 24 hour opened Wal Marts (and similar type stores) just to piss the few bucks we have away buying the latest cheap crap made mostly in China. OBTW, I'm not really blaming China per se (it's a developing nation with now a progressing working class) but more so the greedy corporate world which gladly exploits their cheap labour and then pushes us western consumers to SHOP, SHOP, SHOP. LOAD UP ON MORE CRAP!
IMO, generally the wisest shoppers and likely those with the most cash in reserves and least amount of carried debt to income are those who cut through much of the brainwashing consumerism and more often shop on value and not really price. More of them justify purchases with careful prudence and not just mindless shopping to get MORE STUFF ERR, CRAP!
It's mostly our fault folks that less consumer goods are made in better paying, better living western, with better social safety nets nations.
Let me ask you all here. It is said that the latest Apple iPhone (I'm not picking on Apple, Lord knows other companies are much worse but only using it as an example to fill my question) would cost about $50.00 more if it were to be made in the USA rather than in China. How many of you especially you Wally World shoppers (many who almost live in one of their stores) would pay that difference if given the choice between the two phones? Oh sure, it's easy to say "I'd pay $50.00 more to get one made in the USA." But in reality I'd bet most consumers will pick the Made In China one and pocket the $50.00 to just later waste on some other crap at the local mall or discount store.
I'm not preaching as if I was not ever guilty of this, but dammit I'm doing my best as I continue to mature in life to learn more about prudent consumerism and shopping based more on real value TO ME and not just blind, idiot, price shopping and loading up on more crap I typically have little or no need for.

I think I agree with most of what you say but I have one question about the phone.
Is it said to cost $50 more to buy or cost $50 more to make?
If it cost $50 more to make then it would cost $250 more to buy.

If I recall hearing one of the tech podcasts I listen to a study showed it would cost only $50.00 more retail. But it was a few months ago and I could be wrong in that it may have been cost of manufacture. But IMO it doesn't matter. IMO 2/3 shoppers would buy the Made In China one (any product) and pocket the $50 to then likely waste on some other crap later. It could be $50 or $75 or IMO even just $20, I bet most western consumers would not give a flying BLEEP to buy a Made In USA product if they can get the same one made in China or wherever even if it's $20 cheaper than the Made in the USA version. That is how freaking brainwashed and idiot-like we have typically become as consumers. ALL OF US ME INCLUDED ARE GUILTY OF THIS! I'm just trying to reprogramme my years of brainwashed mind though.
