Received the new reissue of Nick Lowe Labor of Lust yesterday. Packaging is impressive , quiet flat 180 gram pressing. The problem is the sound is very muffled not even AM radio quality. I put this in the same class as the Amy Winehouse back to black? record, but I can't directly compare them because I threw that one out. Oh well, I only paid $10. I just don't understand putting out a first class product with poor sound quality. I have another Nick Lowe (more recent recording) on order. Hopefully that will sound better.

I had a similar impression of this pressing. But I did find that, oddly, some of the tracks sound better than others.
"Record Are Your Best Entertainment Value!"
Don't have another copy for a point of comparison, but I just got Nick Lowe's Cooler Than Jesus (as part of YepRoc's $10 sale). I thought it sounded great. A really nice pressing to my ears. But these ears aren't too familiar with Nick Drake.
I also quite liked their Minus 5 and Wilco LP. Also sounded very nice to my ears. That one I have on CD. I will try to compare the 2 later.
to...be...the guy who corrects unimportant mistakes.....can't...help self....
It's Jesus Of Cool , not "Cooler Than Jesus," and Nick Lowe, not Nick Drake.
Sorry for being "that guy," but Nick Lowe is like a God to me. Glad to hear you enjoyed the album, and hope you explore more of his catalog.
Oh, the correction is much much appreciated. I habitually confuse Nick Drake and Nick Lowe. And that Nick Lowe album name is one I also consistently get wrong. As you have seen above.
If I get something wrong on these forums (probably won't be the last time), correct away.
In my experience, this pressing is all over the map. A few songs sound too bright, a few muffled, a few great. I'd like to know if anyone has any pressing of this where all the songs sound consistently very good, or even consistent.
And IIRC it is very good. It was pressed by Gotta Groove Records and that accounts for the pressing quality. I would double check everything and possibly return it if it is still unacceptable.
That was a pretty well recorded LP.

Ever since you alerted me to Gotta Groove Records Ed, I have to say that they are an A1 outfit, great pressings. They did a great job on the 2 Luna LPs for Record Store Day with 'Bewitched' due on vinyl on 8/21 from GGR.
Of course, if Yep Roc supplies a less than stellar source tape, then all the great work can be for nothing. Somebody should e-mail the label and set them straight on this. Not all music fans appreciate or seek good sound quality. A female friend of mine throws her eyes to heaven whenever I mention sound quality, vinyl this pressing or that pressing and yet she pretty much lives for music. Sigh!
As an aside, GGR will be pressing the new Tift Merritt LP on Yep Roc so that is one I will be anticipating over the coming months.
I was fortunate to have one of the players at Gotta Groove Records send me some LPs to evaluate. They were all very good including this very same Nick Lowe LP.
I know exactly what you are saying about sound quality. They can hear the difference but they don't appreciate it. Its disturbing because they all fall over themselves for better quality video, jewelry, shoes or handbags. Go figure.
My wife doesn't care about my hobby and has taken it as part of me. She can hear the difference and my mother-in-law can hear the difference and they have both admitted to hear the difference but they don't want to be bothered.
I suppose it all boils down to laziness and I can't figure out another explanation. Why would someone not persue better sound if they:
1) Recognized that it did exist
2) Knew where to get that sound
3) Could afford whatever it took to get the sound
Most people just want their downloads on their phones or music players and don't want to be burdened by stuff like vinyl. To be honest I totally understood that attitude each time I had to move my collection but I cannot bear the thought of living with downloads.
Some of them are OK but I grew up with vinyl, know what it sounds like when done properly and won't settle for less.

They put stuff out on vinyl, but they don't seem to have any understanding that people who are into vinyl care about sound quality. Every piece of wax I've ever bought from them has been poor sounding, and I'd bet money they're all pressed from CD resolution digital.
Their reissue of The Soft Boys' Underwater Moonlight was even cut mono (this is an album that was original released in 1980, and most assuredly never had a mono mix).
They obviously have great taste in music, and from what I understand they're nice folks. Unfortunately, when it comes to vinyl, they just don't get it, IMO.
I have one Yep Roc release that sounds pretty good (John Doe and the Sadies "Country Club") but the others are like you said - no point in them even being on vinyl.
One for my own self, one for my son's birfday. Oh well, like you said , it was only $10 each. I've got 3 pressings (at least two of em are oroginals) already in my collection and a Japanese CD import.

The Columbia copy I have rocks. Look for one of those.
I agree that the original US Columbia sounds great. Songs like Big Kick, Plain Scrap is incredible. And the good thing is that originals don't seem hard to find and are usually very cheap.
