Seems like a dumb question, but I've never donated to Goodwill and have never gone to one of their stores. I've gotten a bug up my butt about cleaning up my house and eliminating some clutter and a couple hundred 78s simply have to go. I'm going to run them on Craigslist first but I'm not optimistic that anyone will be interested. Have any of you donated 78s to Goodwill before? I don't want to lug them over and find out they don't want them.

You're throwing out 78's???????????????????????????? Why on earth would you do that?????? They are irreplaceable!!!!!! :(
The only way to know is to ask the Goodwill you might donate to. I'm not sure exactly how Goodwill is structured, but local stores/systems appear to have some independence from whatever is national.
Like others have commented, 78s fare poorly in the Goodwills I've seen. They may fare a bit better in small, independent thrift shops.
If your 78's are intact, yeah they will accept them.
Are there any JAZZ 78'S?
If Jazz or Blues they are worth money.
If Classical they are basically worthless... IMO anyway.
Goodwills in my area refused TVs and computer monitors. Reason: if it didn't sell, they had to pay extra to dispose of them. Most items can go into the Dumpster. But the TVs needed special disposal. They have gone to taking TVs and computer monitors, because I think they now get free recycling. So they can take TVs, try to sell them, and if they don't sell, it doesn't cost them to dump them.
Slide Rules are pretty much useless too...
There is a collectable market for slide rules, however.
At least for the bedroom. The CRT TV, that is... The slide rule, not so much.

really.
I was reading that they are all disappearing, and decided I better buy one NOW, before they all do disappear.
To go with my CD1500C Cd rack
And I may just buy one more for the Hell of it.
Most of the thrifts I frequent will accept 78s.
I've found and bought 78s in thrift shops. On some occasions, very nice records in pristine condition. Sadly, many get mishandled and cracked by uncaring or unknowing workers or customers. So when I see 78s at a thrift, it's usually a 'rescue mission.'
Are the ones in question decent, or scratched up junk? I ask because I've got about 300 culled 78s out in my shop, waiting for the next trip to the landfill. All of these are very common titles in no better than poor to fair condition. I figure the best place for a trashed Ken Griffin 78 is the dump.
Rather than a landfill, scratched or broken 78s can be used by woodworkers. Dissolved in alcohol they are useful for shellac finishes. Maybe offer them to a woodworker instead?
That's an interesting thought. Have you actually tried this or know of it's actual use?
The biggest doubt in my mind is that 78s contain lampblack and other fillers, which may make them unsuitable for use as a wood finish?
Dissolved in alcohol, 78s will create a black shellac. Don't use on high traffic/use items or near water or alcohol. Perhaps coat with varnish. Would make a handsome and appropriate plinth finish for a 78 spinner or electronics cabinet.

Simplify.
Yeah they're classical and I know that doesn't help matters...but Goodwill probably won't know the difference. Yes, they're really nice...and I do worry about careless, ignorant staff people there breaking them...but by that time they're out of my hands and the outcome is all the same to me. I just gotta do this...I worry about having to deal with them if I have to move or, God forbid, I should suddenly drop dead LoL. I'll phone them in the morning to make sure they will receive them.
I've found 78s at Goodwills in at least two states. Don't count on the workers knowing how to properly handle shellac though, most of the ones I've found are smashed. If the ones your looking at disposing of are just a step above trash, then Goodwill away, but if they have some value (musical or monetary), try to find a collector or a record store that will take them.

I was going to suggest calling them, but I can picture that conversation.
"Do you take 78s?" "What's a 78?"
