The Szeryng/Starker/Haitink Brahms Double is a great find, especially as I was unaware it existed!Haitink gets a bit of a kicking around these parts,on this record he keeps the whole thing together to perfection.
Philips engineering at it's best.

That's the one I keep as my stereo standard, but Todd K likes the Stern/Ma digital LP with Abbado, and I listened to it a few months back, also excellent.
How is the Tortelier and Ferras, two artists whom I love?
I also got a used cd of Rostropovich and D Oistrakh recently, the one Szell recorded near the end of his life on EMI/Angel. Rough sound with multimiking, did not care for it that much.
Ferras in particular I am a devoted fan,and his Double Concerto with Tortelier is very fine, but to my surprise I prefer Szeryng/Starker.The recording is not purist as there is some spotlighting going on,with this piece I don't think that is such a bad thing.
You mention Stern,I have a mono US Columbia LP of Stern/Rose/Walter of which I am fond.
I have the Oistrakh/Rostropvich/Szell ASD but never got around to listening to it!After reading your post doubt if I ever will.
You Brits, so privileged.
I would listen, as the brahms VC was supposedly great in that series.
Nowadays, since we moved to a smaller place, my wife doesn't want me to buy too many new ones, unless they're more special.
Aside, My young teen is learning violin, sits in 2 orchestras (2nd violins), and we're now always trying to listen to various concertos. She prefers youtube (ha). They are learning to accompany people, and she recognized the opening part of the Double (that Szell one), but she said, "oh, I know it, but the soloists changed pieces."
She likes concertos, like her Dad. She is now on Saint Saens Intro, Rondo and Scherzo Capriccioso, after going through the 3rd Bach Violin Partita, 1st movement and others prior to that. Amazing the progress young people who are motivated can achieve.
