I received a text message from a good friend last night regarding a turntable that she found for me. From the crummy cell phone pictures I can see that it's a Pioneer PL-530....but that's about all I know about it at this point.
I won't be able to lay my hands on it until Saturday, but I'm curious....is it a "keeper"?

But when she went back to get them.....gone.
Tangletown Garage Sale is this morning, and she's keeping her eyes peeled for more TT's for me!

(see link)I have the PL-570. Like mine yours has a Hall-effect motor and separate tonearm motor, the arm also looks very similar; yours seems to have a integrated tonearm rest where on mine it is mounted as a separate piece.
I really like the PL-570, a joy to work with (balancing arm, etc.) and having a full-automatic table to go along with my main table is something I wish I'd done long ago!
FYI, I've been inside mine and can tell you it is an engineering tour de force, simply incredible! Modular and the automatic operation related pieces are cleverly designed to be under tension when *not* in operation (e.g. no vibrations).
Enjoy.
BTW, the "veneer", if like the 570 (and remember the 570 is a model up), is cheap film and peels of easily. My table is "nude". Shortly after I got it I started hearing a clicking sound. I was a bit of the veneer remaining under the platter that raised and was coming in contact with the platter ... I simply had to peel it off.
Getting the platter off can be a chore, just a pressure fit but boy it gets snug!
The only think I would consider changing is the tonearm wiring, at least the external run (doing the internal would be no easy task I suspect). That should give a nice sonic improvement, not that it doesn't sound good already ... mine with Ortofon 2M Red is very nice, and my "go-to" table for Classic Hard Rock!

Between the 530 and 570. Fully manual, but it also has the "shelf paper" veneer that peels off easily. I haven't heard the 530 or 570. But, if either is like the 550, then they are excellent 'tables.

A manual PL-570?But if it was between the others in the line-up it was presumably more expensive than the 530 ... fair enough *until* you peek inside the 570 and admire the engineering of the automation, and if most of the same is in 530 it would make you wonder if the 550 were such a great deal?
(not that it matters much now!) lol

I've wondered about that too. I'm thinking that the 550 gave you the somewhat higher quality of the 570 (compared to the 530) but at the expense of the automatic features. Features aside, I'm thinking that it would be hard to tell the 3 'tables apart sonically. All are very solidly engineered.

Looking at the innards of the 530 from the service manual (vinyl engine) indicates it isn't as sophisticated under the hood, certainly not the automated stuff. The 530 auto stuff looks very well build but in the 570 it be removed as a "module", a few screws and the whole shebang just lifts out! From a design POV the 570 innards are just way overboard, you open it up and go ... Wow! (judge for yourself)
The other notable thing is the absence of the hefty metal sub-plinth which I guess mostly explains the 4kg difference.
But from a practical performance perspective you could be right all the same, head-to-head would be the only way to check :)

Interesting. There is about a 4 lb. difference between the 3 models. The 530 is 22, the 550 is 26 and the 570 is a hair under 30 lbs. Mine has the metal sub-plinth, as well.

I missed the fact that it is a fully automatic table, and for that sake alone I'm a little excited. And given that you own it's higher-end "cousin", and are pleased with it....
Thank you! I'm looking forward to getting my hands on this one, and I will report back sometime over the weekend as to it's condition and what-not.
