There have been many pro/con posts about the Technics SL1200 - and I suppose there always will be - but after seeing these posts on another Forum I never guessed that this venerable turntable would be suitable to actually create and not only play albums. It is being used and has been used as a cutting lathe; the apparatus is available and I expect it has done a good job.

Doesn't need a damping trough
Hi mcquirek, two comments.
First, the SL-1200 motor might have been used for some inexpensive cutting lathe set up, but I very much doubt it was used to create many commercial LPs, and doubtfully by any major labels. The Technics SP-10 series motors were a step up (torque, speed, rumble, etc.) from that one and then the SP-02 was a major step above those. The SP-02 was the Technics motor most likely used to drive the platter of the cutting lathe for many LPs.
Second, before anyone else jumps on you, try adding any reference links in the Optinal URL window when you post, as below.

I agree that it likely hasn't been done for any commercial records: I think more likely an at-home expensive plaything.
