Hi all,
I used to be here often in the past but it's a few year that I don't post here, work and family kept me very busy, anyway after several years I will finally have a turntable again and as some of my vintage amplifiers are power amps only I was looking for a good (and cheap) tube preamp to pair with them.
A friend has built some nice preamp cloning the phono circuits of the dynaco Pas-3 and of the Eico HF-85 (without the tone controls). I would like to buy one but I don't know which one to choose as I never heard the pas-3 or the hf-85.
So here I am asking to those of you that are familiar with these preamps which circuit would you advise to get.
Thank you in advance
Raul

......I've had both - still have the PAS in a box somewhere - and while both sound pleasant, neither is high fidelity IMHO.
Eli Duttman has a simple schematic based on the old RCA circuit with necessary enhancements to the original design. Have your friend build that or just buy a Bottlehead, Lehmann, Gram Slee, etc. I've had them all and would prefer them all. YMMV
If they truly are clones (built with todays parts) they probably won't sound just like the originals. Better talk your friend into letting you listen to them in your system.
I would go with the PAS for the simple reasons of it's availability of after market parts, support, tweaks and flexibility.
Besides it is a "nice little" preamp after it's been cleaned up and some MINOR mods put in place.
I'm not that familiar with the Eico but I"m sure they are just as nice to work on.
I think you can't really go wrong with either.
