Yes, problems can happen, just as they did to Brian.
But the real point is to have enough communication with the seller to be assured they know what they are doing in packing for shipment. When we use to buy turntables from brick and mortar stores they most certainly were shipped individually from the manufacturers or distributors. So safe shipment is possible.
In my experience FedEx has handled packages better than UPS, but that is no guarantee.

This is the first time I had a turntable from Ebay that got damaged! So I figured it was worth a gamble that this 1 would be sent safely! At least I got refunded & hopefully can make a working turntable out of it!
Over the years, one Empire, two Duals, and a VPI Mk. III
All were problem-free transactions. But I grant the luck involved.
First time I got a turntable sent to me that was not packed safely!
I recently bought a Kenwood KD-3070 turntable on eBay after looking for a turntable locally for many months. It arrived in perfect condition, but I agree that it is a crap shoot.
First 1 from Ebay that was not shipped safely!
