I won this turntable on Ebay!(actual photo from the auction)Only to see it get broken, when sent to my house by UPS! This is one time I will say for sure the seller did not know how to ship a turntable! It looked like he just lifted it up and put it in a box wtih a little bubble wrap around it! The entire dust cover was smashed into quite a few pieces due to the heavy platter sliding off and bouncing around inside the dust cover! The tonearm was not even locked down & you could see where it was flopping around as well!I hate seeing nice equipment get ruined that could have been avoided if a little common sense had been used! I contacted the seller to see if we can work out some type of agreement over this as I feel I should get some money back! Having been a member here for many years I know first hand that my horror story is far from being the first when it comes to shipping & EBAY!Will try & post a picture of what is left of the Dust cover! As soon as I can!
Follow Ups:
I bought a Harman Kardon ST-7 nonworking on eBay. It was supposed to come with a Shure V15 type IV, and the dust cover was in good shape. The shipper stuck it in a box, no packing, UP SIDE DOWN. The dust cover arrived as a three-dimensional puzzle and there was no sign of the cartridge. After initially denying any liability the seller gave me a complete refund and let me keep the parts unit. I would rather have gotten what I paid for.
That's very sad, the ST-7 was a beautiful turntable.

Years ago, back when I was in the audio biz, I ordered a brand new AR turntable at a discount direct from AR. Like your purchase, it arrived with the platter loose, and nearly everything was damaged, including the tonearm. I returned it, but when a replacement didn't show up in a few weeks, I called AR. They told me the turntable I received had been the last AR turntable in the factory, it was out of production, and they wouldn't be able to replace it. I bought a Denon instead, but I've always regretted not having a good, manual AR. :(

This unfortunately happened to me last year on eBay. Won an old Garrard 4HF in decent shape only to open the ups box and see the horror show that was once a nice old unit. Seller offered a partial refund. Luckily I had another parts unit I could scavenge parts from. Never again!
It is so sad because none of these vintage Turntables are still being built!

all the best,

Yes, problems can happen, just as they did to Brian.
But the real point is to have enough communication with the seller to be assured they know what they are doing in packing for shipment. When we use to buy turntables from brick and mortar stores they most certainly were shipped individually from the manufacturers or distributors. So safe shipment is possible.
In my experience FedEx has handled packages better than UPS, but that is no guarantee.

This is the first time I had a turntable from Ebay that got damaged! So I figured it was worth a gamble that this 1 would be sent safely! At least I got refunded & hopefully can make a working turntable out of it!
Over the years, one Empire, two Duals, and a VPI Mk. III
All were problem-free transactions. But I grant the luck involved.
First time I got a turntable sent to me that was not packed safely!
I recently bought a Kenwood KD-3070 turntable on eBay after looking for a turntable locally for many months. It arrived in perfect condition, but I agree that it is a crap shoot.
First 1 from Ebay that was not shipped safely!
as needed! I bought this for my Yamaha system in the bedroom!
buying a turntable off of eBay is a risky proposition. You have to really know what you are doing to ship it intact. Have you contacted the seller, or did you pay so little that it is not worth the trouble?

He is refunding my Paypal account for the full amount!
Happy ending!
Dave
Should get the refund in a day or 2,but is a shame the dust cover was so busted up etc.!
