I finally picked up my new-to-me tuner today. It works beautifully and is as sensitive and selective as my Onkyo T-4087. Sound is very, very close with just a tiny bit more warmth in the Sony. Styling is silver faced but pretty conservative; where the black Onkyo looks like a jukebox.Len Feldman had given this tuner a glowing review in Audio (I still miss that magazine) and I've been on the lookout for one for several years. For $75, I'm not disappointed.

Cool piece of gear you got there. Fortunately, I'm pretty happy with the tuner in the Marantz 2250B.
It's interesting that a tuner really only needs to be good enough for a specific location. You really don't gain anything by it being over specified. But that's also true of most of our electronic gear.
FWIW, I used to use the "little brother" ST-J55 AM/FM unit. Definitely NOT junk.

Eli,Yes indeed. I looked up the ST-J75 on the Tuner Information Site and they mentioned the ST-J55 & 60 very kindly. Called it a much overlooked group. There's also a reprint of the Audio test report on the ST-J75.
This thing sold for $450 in 1981, which was a lot of money for the time.
LOL
Probably the best $75 you could spend on a tuner.
For pure sound quality my vote goes to the Onkyo T-9.

I tried a T-9 a while back, but it didn't handle the multipath problem I have in this location. Which is why I bought the Onkyo T-4087. I did upgrade the antenna a bit since then so my Onkyo TX-870 receiver is OK now; but I really need a directional antenna. (or I could dynamite the city water tower--nah, the antenna's easier to get)
