looks good whether it is on or off? I have a JVC RX 307 Reciever that I think looks ugly off and so so when its on,compared to my Superscope Amp & Tuner which looks beautiful on or off! I also think my Marantz 2250 B looks good on or off! Most stereo recievers and other equipment being built today just does not look as good as some of the older equipment in my opinion anyway! What are your thoughts? Brian

Nothing - all my stuff only looks good when it is on. When off, it looks unused and forlorn.

I always WAS a sucker for a pretty face! That's probably the strongest reason why it's still in my rack-certainly not because of the quality of stations in these parts.

Fisher 500-B. Classic, clean looks with the champagne-colored faceplate during daylight, and neat illumination at night, with the dial lamps and the stereo beam indicator tube. Most impressive at night, however, is the glow from all the tubes (no wooden enclosure) without any of the harsh incandescent bulb light that effects the 500/800-C's appearance. Tube heaven.

.....for me, I think the Nak sytem one rack is classic industrial modern.....function over form.Best,

My mother-in-law, after seeing the Levinson 33H amps in my listening room: "Those are the nicest electric room heaters I've ever seen".

My Pioneer TX-9500 Tuner in its wood case, Quicksilver FullFuction Preamp in silver, and Pioneer PL-30 Turntable rebuilt with a SME 3009II tonearm installed!
Man this thing looked like a piece of art. One of the few early black faced integrated amps with silver trim, stylish font silk screening, perfect layout of controls, toggles at every turn. The detail was VERY impressive. Even the aluminum knobs were beveled and had a silver edge detail engraved into all knobs and toggles that was SSSOOOOO sharp to just look at. So being an integrated amp it didn't matter if it was on or off.Sound was average but looked like a million dollars.
The AU-717 is truly an excellent looking/sounding amplifier. If that model in itself is such a visual treat, just imagine pairing it with its matching tuner, the gorgeous TU-717, & 'double your pleasure' :)

Mac MR77 tuner. Beautiful any time of day--on or off--but especially on at night. More bang for buck than I've ever gotten from any electronic component.

Unfortunately, most of the stuff I have looks pretty much the same on or off. It's all black faced and just few small LED's or LED displays come on-think Adcom GTP-350. But a while back I owned an H-K 730 and a Pioneer SX-828 that I thought were two of the three best looking receivers, ever. The Marantz 2238 was the third if it had the optional wood case. All three of those look great on or off.
I have an original quad of vTL kt90s and I put them in the mc60s tonite and my mc60s have a full scale upgrade with all new silicon ww resistors and some vishays amd mils and a all new filter caps with a 100uf motor run after the choke..Also vit Q pio caps and I will tell they have very nice bass and its very clean all thru the audio spectrum and very dynamic as well as accurate..The kt88s are also but I was amazed becuase the kt90s never sounded good in the mc60s until I did the rebuild and they are very nice and I wish they would make this tube of this quality again. They seem to have a slight bit more power the genelexs although Im not sure..
Now guys dont take this wrong becuase I always brag up the kt88sc shuguang and I still do but the Genes do have a slight bit more power but its nothing signifigant and the sonics in the kt88sc are pretty close if not better than the gold lions once broken in.

gyro tuning knob are quite attractive. The Mac and Marantz amps, while we love them, look slightly militaryish and utilitarian. The worst looking piece to me are the Sherwood tube tuners. Good performers, maybe, but dog ugly.

Eico HF-20, it's the runner up in the ugly amplifier contest. The Bogen DB20 is the winner. I could only afford the runner up, my neighbor had the Bogen.
i have an eico hf-87.. my wife calls it 'the reactor'... or 'the second furnace'...

The only ones that are kind of gaudy looking are fisher receivers and some of the pilots because they look like test gear to me even tho pilots sound very good.
Now my citation two is a honey as well as my macs and my altec 1570s and my knight kb85s and there are many others and if I had to part with any I would be sick for a year. My marantz 8 is pretty nice to especially since I got it for 400 dollars.

To my tastes, the best looking amps that I own. They look fast standing still.
Does that count?

That is the best looking per my idea. But, I do not own any. I am a tube person.
![]()
Agreed.
Of course they didnt have any power amps to speak of in tube gear but the SS amps like the pioneer spec 2 looked really nice..It sounded like shit until you redid the power supply but they were work horses.
![]()
I don't own it but I have always felt the single most beautiful piece of audio gear was the Marantz 7(the 7T was a close second) with its awesome almost Doric, Greek elegance and simplicity.

No question.....plenty of doobies and red wine plus the occasional lava lamp plus those blue meters dancing along with Led Zepplin. Melted into the couch many times.....Cheers,
My Macs need currently unaffordable repair. They accusingly glare at me whenever I enter the room -- an ugly experience.
Thanks! Sounds like interesting times!Brian

I do remember it was fun.Sometimes its the equipment but sometimes its just the environment.
Cheers,
