Just thinking about using say a .22uf cap to hook my amp to main speaks and a 4uf cap to my subs. These caps would be hooked to the tube output of my pre. A switch allows a choice between 2 different value caps on the pre, and I thought that I might bybass the switch and run the different value caps to their prospective output. Anyone see a potential problem with this? In short, I would have both caps input hooked to the tube output and the .22 cap going to,(rca), output #1 which should feed my mains with a rolloff of about 70hz and the output of the 4uf cap output going to,(rca), output # 2 which should feed the subs with a rolloff of about 10hz.

Well it sounds like you are trying to use the caps as high pass crossover filters. This will work, but you don't mention the input impedance of the two amps you will use. I will assume you have done the calculations correctly for that. What will you use as the low pass filter on the sub? If 4uf truely does pass 10 hz and above you will be asking the subs to play everything up to 20khz right? Why did you pick 10hz? If you are worried about DC - and you should be it is wise to run the sub signal through a cap. I remember the first time I met Carl Marchisotto and asked him what he thought of my shorting across the cap at the input of my DQ-LP1 crossover (FYI it is 2.0uf). He designed it btw. He just smiled and said, "well John, it may sound better, but you'll be asking me to recone your subs before long." It is there to block DC!
Looks like your only hole is the low pass portion of the filter to your subs. Want a quick answer on that? I once several years ago asked Jon Risch about building one for a friend's car sub amp. Do a search on JK and low pass see if you can find his kind response.
Thanks for the reply, John. I guess I forgot to mention that the subs have built-in low pass x-overs. They are adjustable from 40hz to 140 hz. My amp has 10k input inpedance, but I am not sure about the sub amps. My goal is to take the very bottom end away from the main speaks, (which have a pair of 5 1/4" mid woofs each), so that I can achieve a higher volume level b4 the little guys bottom out. Not that I listen @ that high of a volume regularily, but it's nice to be able to show off to your friends once in a while.
