To save weight, can I use a donut shaped center support and end supports (just the smaller wood circles that the wire attaches to)? I would still use solid end caps.
The center disc should be solid, sot hat it divides the inner compartment up, and reduces the effects of any air leaks at any given spot.As Gary states, these are fairly lightweight units, and weight should not be a big concern.

g'day,Mate, having built these, I can tell you that the extra weight is next to nothing. You can lift a bass trap of this design over your head with one hand (if you can get a grip on it). They only weigh a couple of kilograms.
So, cutting a torus out of chipboard isn't required. The centre disc is for stiffening when you compress the outer layers of f/g or BAF, and probably should be as strong as possible.
