yeah.... you gotta love this... if it is sold as an audiophile product its esoteric and priced acccordingly.... "Sir, this is no ordinary wood ! This wood was hand Tachyonized under a full moon by vestal virgins ! Your sound will accordingly be NUBILE! RAVISHING!"You might want to consider, on the other hand, top quality clear maple blocks that are sold as toys... the same objects that are given to children in kindergartens throught the land... that come in many useful sizes and shapes...
for example, a piece that is 1.325" x 2.75" x 11", two would be perfect to fit under most equipment feet, sells as "open stock" for
$3.14 each, that's three dollars and fourteen cents, not $314, as you might imagine from Ye Olde Hi Ende Shoppe....I'm going to buy several different shapes, and for a radical experiment, have them cryogenically treated (yes, Virginia, organic materials do respond to cryo, and I have many items to prove it, including some suits made from cryogenically treated wool) to see where that leads....
Follow Ups:
We have a couple of lumber stores locally that have 2"x3"x12" blocks of purple heart for $3.00. I believe that the same logic that makes it good for cartridge bodies would make it good for footers.

What..!
Those maple footers ON SALE for $314....are they gold plated?!Has anyone try candles under their CD player?
You can get them in egg shape or small sphere type and only cost around $2 for a set of four or six!
If the candles doesn't work for you...then you can burn it, two functions for the price of one.
they are kid's educational toys. they are pretty much the same wood as "audiophile" bases, maybe kiln dried vs. air dried. The have a small, convenient size, 2.750" x2.750" for a whopping $1.06 each...
so 4 of them for your preamp will cost you $4.24... that's less than a copy of stereophile...

Yeah,I'm not going to discount what they have to say, - and how well their products work before I test them, - or something similar: but you're right, - that stuff is soooo expensive. I mean, - $230 for a 16" X 18" by 4 inch block of maple is pretty outrageous. We have a rare wood, counter wood, type shop in Berkeley, - and it IS difficult to get cuts of maple in that configuration, - but goodness....
I'm just going to try a 2 1/2" thick maple cutting board with some SSC pucks underneath, - my Aurios and CDP will sit on top of that.
Mapleshade is not a Home Depot! How much is your time worth in terms of cutting and finishing wood? What about your overhead and insurance? They also have a business with overhead, advertising, etc.
It's not easy being in business-is it?
I hear your point.....I DO feel that it's important to take into account R&D and the expenses of a business. $230 for a block of wood is more expensive than a Symposium Svelt shelf, - which a lot more went into....
Still, - my post is nothing more than whine, - if I don't like it, - I don't have to buy it...
You're right....
there is also this intensely hard root wood that smoking pipes are made from... you can order raw briar blocks from pipe makers supplu companies.... I believe the wood comes from a specific shrub that is them sent to Italy for intermediate processing.... they have to boil it for a few days, other voodoo. The briar blocks are moderately sized squares. A woodshop that handles projects like harwood turning should know what to do with them.
Another material that nobody had tried so far is also used for pipe making, it is meerschaum, a beautiful white sedimentary mineral that is about soft as the mineral talc and made up of microscopic plankton skeletons.
