I strongly suggest the HD PVC pipe, as it is less resonant than the cheaper stuff. We are not talking about a lot of money difference, but who wants plastic resonators int he sound field?Jon Risch
Jon --I'm glad you have entered into this -- your instructions are confusing to me, and I'll admit this could be my own ignorance on the subject. if my confusion is because of U.S. terms versus those used somewhere else, I apologize.
Your instructions say the Argent tubes are slightly less than 2" id, but then you recommend 2-1/2" PVC pipe. Pipe is measured by id. I then looked at PVC pipe specifications. Nominal 2-1/2 diam. schedule 80 pipe, which is what I thought you might mean by HD, is actually 2.875 od, 2.289 id. 2" schedule 80 pipe is 2.375 od, 1.913 id. I asked one of our local plumbers, and a good friend, checked on the availability and cost of 2-1/2" schedule 80 PVC. The distributor has to order it and it is slightly over $2 per foot. Definitely not the stuff you find in your local hardware store, plumbing supply house, or Home Depot.
What is sold in those places is typically 2" schedule 40 pipe. This is the stuff that is commonly used for drains, etc. It is 2.375" od, 2.049 id and costs about $0.50 per foot. For the 60 feet I'm considering to build 4 room lens, the difference between the schedule 80, which I had assumed you were specifying, and schedule 40 is about $100. That's a lot of money difference to me.
So my question is, what exactly do you mean by 2-1/2 HD PVC. I would like to build these things right the first time and hope that you can clarify this.
Some talk for an audio DIY bulletin board, huh? Sounds more like Plumber's Unlimited. I did a Web search on pipe and came across some things called Spud Guns. Check these out! And people think audio nuts are sort of extreme. Anyway, thanks in advance for any clarification you might provide. I also want to thank you for all the ideas and plans you have shared and your more than active participation in this and all the questions people ask about your stuff.
Schedule 40 2", as opposed to the foam core or low pressure PVC. Sorry for the confusion, I used the local label for the PVC pipes.Jon Risch
Jon, Manx, JovenThanks for all your help and tips. I will have a busy weekend cutting PVC. Hope to let you know how the DYI room lens work out.
Thanks again
Good Luck Phil,You beat me to it. I am planning on building them soon but I'm still in the process of making absorbing panels and RPG diffusors clones at the same time.
Phil you can also use a similiar process as the base for the top bracket but with thinner material. You can bring the edges much closer to the holes for the pipes let's say at least .5" to .25" Aluminum will give it an industrial look and depending on thickness and how you handle it, it shouldn't bend, also with ABS and Acrylic. To be on the safe side though stick with .5" from the edge to the hole, I've heard my fair share of cracks and breaks. If you don't want to DIY the top, most of the Plastics businesses have machine shops inside. You pick the material(clear or smoke color acylic for example), show them the top view of the bracket with the dimensions for the holes and spacing, they should easily crank out 5 for you and polish the edges to boot. Also bring a piece of PVC pipe with you and they can get the fit pretty snug. It shouldn't cost that much at all depending on their in house shop. Being at the shop you can also ask them for advice of how to bond the plastics together as they have alot of bonding goodies there.
Much Thanks to Jon Risch, Thorsten and many others who contributed to the DIY RoomLens and most of all to Argent.
J
