I have had a discusssion w/ the wife about making some of your diy acoustic panels and bass traps using plain burlap.....she wants to paint them when I'm done. Will the paint effect the characteristics of the units?
Thanks for all your input guys.....the wife looked at me like I'm nuts when I told her that "painting" the panels will defeat the purpose.....maybe know we can "compromise"....if only I could win the lottery, then I could buy a home with a dedicated listening room......oh well until then....back to reality
Paint on any acoustic surface is a no-no, and will cause HF reflectance.
First, check out Wal-Mart for the different colors of burlap (it may be called jute), they have green, blue, red, yellow, brown, natural (sort of a straw or tan color), and off-white. They may have other colors, and I can not remember if they have black or not. One of these colors may be suitable to your wife.
If not, then check out a fabric store, and see what they have in the way of burlap or jute in colors.
Failing both of these, speaker grille cloth can be used, and will perform better than painted burlap. There are many different sources for speaker grille cloth, including RS. Just be sure it is being sold as speaker grille cloth, and is not just some random double-knit polyester or other fabric that is called grille cloth by some local vendor.
Realize that anything else will affect the HF reflectance, and this will make the wall panels less effective. It would not affect the bass traps as much, especially if that was all they were going to be used for, and there was no concern for using them in other manners along the side walls, etc as indicated by ASC. If you were to paint the bass traps, it might be OK _IF_ the paint did not fill up the fabric holes, as once this occured, they would no longer function properly. In the case of a painted bass trap, you should omit the layer of plastic beneath the one side.

If he can't find the color that he's looking for, what about dyeing the burlap ? You can buy MANY colors of RIT* dye at the local grocery store and this should work fine as far as i could see. It shouldn't harden the material or clog up the holes in any way. Sean

John,
I really appreciate your efforts on the panels and other acoustic treatments. My new house has three hard parallel walls with the fourth side being picture windows. I plan on re-reading all your panel articles sometime in the near future.... and constucting one for the front wall.
I just wanted to give a big THANKS to you ............ but ............
Did you have to say JUTE ???
Like my buddy sez, "Don't talk about people .... they might show up " !!!
