Can anyone direct me to information about how to "trick" a pioneer CD recorder to accect data grade discs. Is there a modifaction kit, or company that does the modifactions? Or can you just do this through some tinkering at home? Thanks very much.
You apply a + or - 5v signal to the drawer opening motor , you have to bypass the motor drawer connector otherwise you blow a chip , so essentially you need to isolate the 5 (or 6) conductor cable and then apply the voltage to the motor supply leads.
You load a good Cdr , let it read isolate the cable , open the drwer via the 5v signal , insert a cheapy , close via the signal , "reconnect" the cable and record
Iread where someone had a formula, it involving putting double switches , hard wieing them inside the unit, and building a box to mount them in....It was detailed..It was on the net somewhere.....Check your browser for Tricking the pioneer etc.....
I will look and try to re find it when I get home later tonight....
Good luck in your search
You might install copernic it is free
www.copernic.com to search.
Here is the link-chase
AFAIK, the only model that you can "trick" to use the computer CDs is the (now discontinued) 870. They are selling used on Ebay for around $400.
You're referring to the Philips here, not the Pioneer. The Pioneers (04, 05 & 555; don't about the 09) trick in the same way, also as roberts has mentioned above, there is an internal mod (posted at one time on the 'Net) which is also effective, and possibly less wearing on the drawer).
Did stereophile have some easy way to do it, someone told me they did. YOu put in a regular disc first, and soon after pryed open the door and switched to a data disc. Does this sound familiar. Otherwise, Id love to get the site of the place that has a kit. Thanks guys
This was posted on one of the ads on Ebay:Providing you have the Philips CDR 870, here it goes.
1. Turn on unit (empty) press open
2. Insert the music only CD and press close.
3. Wait for the OPC (optical power calibration) to calibrate.
4. When the display reads 0(TK) 0:00(Time) open the door with your fingernail under the door carefully, (not worm gear driven) and pull the door 3/4 the way open to manually extract the music only CD.
5. With door 3/4 way open, insert the Data CD.
6. Close door manually, (gentle push all the way in)
7. Press the REC button.
8. Display should say 01(tk) 0:00
9. Begin recording, use as normal.
10. DO NOT FORGET TO FINALIZE
11. When finalized, you can push the open button and your CD is complete.
12. You only get 99 boot-ups from the music CD.
13. After the 99TH boot-up the display will say OPC fail
14. The Music only CD is now trash.
15. You get a warning on the 99th boot-up saying OPC FINAL, just burn to that one, to keep from wasting it.
16. Go out an buy a new "music only" CD for 99 more boot-ups.I don't know if it will work with others, but it's sure worth a try.
Did you get copernic search engines????/I will try to find it now.....
I believe you are refering to the article about a year ago where they tested the various media for quality, and that included the 'audio'cdr's and our friendly, neighborhood data cdrs.
In that the author *did* mention the method of starting with an audio cdr to validate whatever it checks, then prying open the door and tossing in the data cdr.
His upshot to the article was that he could hear virtually no difference in end product recordings.
I know that he did get the data cd's to work with his perhaps rough methodology.
Good luck!
