Which should I use on my large floor standing speakers? The spiking kits(which includes a bit) go for about 30 bucks. The cones are much more expensive, but I will pay it if they are worth it! I've seen these items
on Ultra Hi-fi's store page
If you have a suspended floor, try a concrete paver under each speaker with some blutak to both protect the floor and provide some isolation.
That depends-do you have carpeting? Are the cones pointy enough to penetrate the carpet. Cones *usually* have a sonic signature, depending on the material and shape of the cone. Spikescan have less of a signature. Did your speakers come with anything?
Jack
My speakers originally came with spikes that were mounted on a flimsy plastic base. I've taken the base off so that now the speaker cabinet itself is directly on the wood. I'm in the process of making a small but designated listening room. This room (12x11x8.5) has hardwood floors.
Right now it is on concrete which is on berber carpeting. Compared to when there were spikes the music seems less detailed and the bass a bit muddy.
But its better than hearing the noise from the old plastic bases.
Hello there . I'm in the same ship with you . I add a 10"X14"X1" granite base to my speakers . This add more weight and stability to the speakers and lesser the vibration in some degree . I notice a tighter bass and better responce on the top . For now I'm using the original spikes but I'm searching for cones . From what I search , the Nordost Pulsar Points reviewed in SoundStage are very good ( $99 X 4 ). One option are the Solen MISSTR and with a good price ( $ 58 X 8 ). They look like the Lovan cones and have adjustment at the points. Other options come from Audiopoints and AudioNut web . It is said that each material add a different sonic presentation to the sound . Every company have their own conclusions . Just read every article and make your own research. Good luck.
Jose,
When you say you added granite bases to your speakers do you mean you just have them on top of granite? Or, have you actually affixed the granite to the cabinet somehow?
At any rate. I think I may just go with new spikes. I don't like the idea of cones having sonic differences.
One granite slab is attached to the bottom of the speakers using screws where the original spikes holes were and a new set of Solen cones were added to the granite base . The other slabs were put on top ( with bluetac ) adding some mass and stability to the speakers. I e-m you with full details. Good luck and better sound .
