Just thought I would throw this out there to some beginner tweakers.I took my Parts Express Medium Mass speaker stands and replaced the top plates with some 8"X6"X1" Oak. It was quite simple as the top plate just unscrewed from the center column.
I countersunk and drilled 2 holes for the exising screws. My idea came from TNT-Audio.com. They have a recipe for a wood/PVC pipe speaker stand. For better looks and ease of construction I am doing a wood/steel stand.
I have yet to replace the bottom plate and I have not yet filled my stands with sand/shot. Once I do this, I will fill everyone in with a complete review.
Initial listening has had very good results. Overall, the sound is much smoother. Soundstage is wider and much more realisitic. No drawbacks either, not that I have noticed yet.
After completing the bottom plate, I plan to seek out some thicker Maple. The wood I bought was cheap hobby wood from Lowe's.
If anyone has tried this, let me know, I would appreciate suggestions.

Follow Ups:
If you want thicker maple go to a kitchen cabinet and counter supplier that does its own installation. They may sell you some butcher block offcuts foer a good price. The last pair of dtands I built used oak stair tread for the top and bottom plates. With a single post made of 3 inch iron pipe. Home depot will cut to length and thread the ends. spin the ends into appropriate flanges and mount your top and bottom plates.

Thanks for the help. I will check that out.How do you like the sound of the stands? Mine have been a great improvement.

The stands didn't sound just fine. Meaning to say they exhibited no resonances to speak of . At about 50 lbs. each (sand filled) they do what good little speaker stands are supposed to do. Add mass and height to the speakers. This has the usual positive effects on bass, overall clarity and imaging. EKG
