I'm considering building a pair of monitor speakers. They need to be voiced like Spendors, i.e., warm/soft but articulate. I've done extensive research here and in the kit manufacturers websites (Zalytron, North Creek, Madisound, snippets.org, GR research, BESL, Selah, etc. etc.). Amplification is solid state (85 WPC), primary listening taste is rock and classical. I'd like the speaker to be universal enough (impedance, sensitivity, etc.) to be "tube friendly" as well if I go that route someday.I've come up with this top candidate: Dillon Acoustics "Attitude"
(kit is complete via Zalytron)
It uses the Focal 7NV-4411 7" "Neo Glass" Woofer-Midrange and Hiquphon OWII 19mm Cloth Dome Tweeter.Thoughts or other recommendations?

Then there is the Ellis Audio 1801b.....

You might want to look at this site.http://www.snippets.org/ldsg/sect-15.php3#INTRO
That section lists the drivers used in various kits. For example the tweeter used in the kit you like is only used in that kit. Doesn't mean it is bad, just not what everyone else likes to use. Maybe you can see what the big dollar designs are using and find a cheaper one that uses the same drivers. Don't cut corners on the crossover design/parts. When you come down to it that is really what you are paying for and can make/break the project. As far as "universal", being good for both solid state and low wattage tubes, I am not too sure if such a speaker is out there. Some of the early Klipsch are as close as I know. Try the LaScala. Horns aren't for everyone. But if you want something that will do decent bass with under 7 watts one has few choices.
Bottlehead S8 bigger than book shelf but I believe meets most of your criteria
