Hi,
For my project I have to install some RCA's (female) on a chassis. The body of the RCA's should be isolated from the chassis with the included plastic washers. Is this correct and if it is what is the best way to do this?
Follow Ups:
There are many apps where you want to conrol where the input and output grounds connect to the chassis...As an example, in a power amp, currents within the metal chassis (eddy currents from the transformer, as an example), may cause the ground to vary potential. If the input sees that ground potential, you may get hum.The isolated rca's give you flexibility in where the input ground actually connects.
Just use the right size drill. I personally like the unibits, as they have only one cutting edge, and tend not to chatter. And the next size on the shank serves as a great chamfering tool, clearing any sharp edges that could cut the plastic insulator.
Solder the ground to the ring lug OFF the mount, as you can melt it.
Where to connect the ground? That varies by circuit, you'll have to try...You've given not enough details to answer that, other than a typical star ground.
Thanks John,
the project is a phono preamp with separate psu (just to make my life more complicated). So, the answer is to use correct drill size and the plastic washers suplied with the RCAs will to the job. Thanks again.
I assume you'll also have a binding post for the ground wire. Isolate that if it isn't for the same reason...Ground control (not to major tom). And put the post in close proximity to the rca's..When you have the circuit up and running, wrap the phono ground wire around both phono cables all the way to the binding post..that can drastically reduce hum pickup caused by loop intercept of stray magnetic fields. That way, you don't troubleshoot hum problems that are not caused by your pre-amp.
"Isolated binding post for the ground wire." - that's a good point. But where to connect? There are three options here: chassis, power supply ground or signal ground. I believe that correct place would be power supply ground or chassis (chassis is connected to the power supply chassis which is connecetd to the main ground). What do you think?"Wrap the phono ground wire around both phono cables" - this I will try tonight. Thanks

My first reaction would be to star them all at one chassis point. Is your pre a diy, or a kit, or a home brew? If it's someone elses design, they may have recommendations..
...sorry. Couldn't resist.
