I built a 3 shelf rack using 1.5" MDF and it's a *very* sturdy and heavy. I use small pieces of maple under some of the equip now but maple would have been too expensive for the whole thing, ~48" x 23". I had the 5/8" all thread machined to a point for coupling to my wood floor. Works great. That's about 130 pounds of iron and glass on the top shelf!

Nice looking stand. Could I ask how you got such nice clean edges on the MDF shelves? Thanks.

What did you use for the top nut
on the all thread?

Those are chrome plated push on metal caps that sit flush with the top shelf. It takes a 1 1/4" countersunk hole drilled about 3/4" deep. If you pry up the cap you will see the 5/8" nut. It's *much* better than having that nut stick up on top. I got the caps from my local Ace Hardware.
