I had a similar problem making a pair of very cheap (but good!) I/C's out of R/S 30-ga magnet wire. I made the first pair "nude", but they seem really fragile (ephemeral, even), so I thought it'd be a good idea to sheath the next pair in some teflon. Actually, I ended up using small i.d. Tygon because I had some. I coerced the flimsy twisted pair of 30-ga enameled wires through the "sticky" Tygon by spritzing (that's the technical term) a little WD-40 on the twisted pair. Not terribly elegant, but it worked for a 1-m set of cables.
BTW, I like the "centrifugal force" suggestion!
