Hi,
Just bought myself an old Platinum Studio 1. Sounds good, but one of the tweeter has some defect, someone put a hole into it. The original tweeter is an aluminum dome (8 ohms).
I read a lot of good things about the Vifa Ring Radiator Tweeter and I'm thinking of changing the original to the Vifa. But, my concern is that, the Vifa is a 4 ohms tweeter.
Question : Can I just replace it, one to one, and hear improvement? If not, what can I do to get some real improvement? Add in series, another 4 ohms resistor ??? ..please help!
Follow Ups:
Too bad about your tweeter. It's possible that it may be a Vifa tweeter, or perhaps SEAS. Both are OEMs for many speaker mfgs. If thats the case you can study the dead tweeter and prob. figure out which model matches it closely. That said, keep in mind that most mfgs order "custom" designs. "Custom" can range from a special faceplate to different magnet, back chamber, faraday rings, etc etc, thus making a replacement either a drop-in or a "one-off" version that cannot be duplicated. Good luck w/ your research.
I did just the same with a pair of old speakers with piezo tweeters.
The Vifa's sound fantastic.
You will need to change the crossover due to the lower resitance of the Vifa. My speakers had a 1st order xo so I doubled the value of the capacitors in the tweeter crossover to keep the crossover point the same. You will need to work out what type of xo the Platinums have and modify accordingly.
I didn't worry about the small change in resistance as concerns minimum speaker resistance.
Cheers

Thanks a lot, John. I'll try to find out more info on my Platinum.
