Hi,I'm getting close to building my second Flexy. This one will go in the Living room and be very wide.
I want to build it with Hardwood Maple. I need some pretty big shelves and I don't want to veneer.
The dimensions of each shelf will be 66" Wide X 18" Deep. The wood can either be 3/4" or 1" Thick. I'll be either using 4 or 5 shelves with 6 Stainless Steel or Brass threaded rods which will be 36" x 5/8".
TIA,
Follow Ups:
I know Hearne Hardwoods in Oxford PA has what you are looking for. Single boards 18" wide in maple are not very common, if Rick has it, it will be 8/4 (2") or thicker. If you have the facilities to glue up the boards he definitely has 10" 4/4 or 5/4 boards. He can plane and belt sand anything upto 36" wide. If you want other species (walnut or cherry) he has slabs upto 50" wide. The wider the lumber the more it will cost you. Give Rick a call he is an awfully nice guy, he can ship the stuff to you.

I'll have to definitely give him a call. I don't have the facilities to do any gluing. The only piece of real equipment that I have to do the Flexy, is a drill press. I also don't have the woodworking skills to start learning how to apply veneer. This sounds like the best option so far or pay someone to do the glue thing.
Thanks,
;-D

Hi,A little thicker than you wanted. However, I have used this to make a workbench and it is great stuff. Should be able to get two shelves of your dimensions out of one of these.

Hi CK,Boy, that is thick, however not out of reason.
Something to consider. Hmmmm!
Thanks,
5/8 all tread rod eh? Hmmmmm I am currently building a corner audio rack and when I looked into rod even the 3/4 seemed a bit whimpy to use. I went with 1 inch rod and it currently is in the chrome shop.

I was also concerned about this a while back. My friend, who is a structural engineer laughed at me. He said that that 5/8" threaded rods would hold up an automobile engine if braced correctly. The one I built for the bedroom a while back works great. I even put a 200 plus pound TV on it was fine.
In the latest Audio Advisor or Music Direct Catalog, I see one which looks like it uses 3/8" threaded rods or smaller.

Where I live, most of the big box home improvement stores carry dimensioned maple lumber. Otherwise, check your phone book under "hardwoods" for local sources. There are also internet sources for dimensioned hardwood like www.constantines.com.One caveat. You are not likely to find wide boards. You will probably have to joint and glue up two or more boards for the width you desire.
An good alternative would be maple plywood with solid maple edge banding.

Try this, tho you will have to make the shelves.
