Hi Barry:I think you might be right with regard to energy drainage... being a scientist (admittedly a chemist and not an engineer) I have a bit of trouble swallowing some of the claims made by 'tweak' manufacturers.
With regards to the spiked support, I suspect that the mass of the support merely 'tunes' the resonant frequency. If I have a heavy equipment stand (with a low resonant frequency) on which I place a light spiked support (with a high resonant frequency), then I may be able to minimise the transmissions of certain frequencies to and from my equipment.
As an example, if I place my rega planar 3 directlyon the top shelf of my salamander equipment rack, and tap the shelf with a finger, I can hear a low-frequency 'thud' through the loudspeaker. If I put the rega on a light spiked support, and repeat the experiment, the 'thud' is much lower in amplitude, and is higher in frequency.

As Barry says, spikes couple and promote the more efficient transfer of energy.I have a theory, based on the fact that things sound different to me depending on whether the spike or cone is pointing up or down plus differences I hear using 2 different size/shapes of Tiptoes made from the same material, that the geometry and material used in the cone, as well as the direction in which it is pointing, have an effect on audible results. I think that's why different people seem to prefer different cones though of course differences in components and support racks will also have an effect here. So I'd agree with you that there is some "frequency tuning" going on.
