This has been mentioned before. However, it is so good, dredging it up might be worth something to those who missed it.I put Blue Tack on the crystal of my Rotel RCD-855 cdp. Okay, okay. Truth in advertising: it was yellow tack - 99 cents at the 99 Cent Store.
What a difference! It really improved the bass. Didn't make it boomy, just gave it a nice, natural, balanced boost. The transients also improved. Plus, the soundstage really filled in. On most recordings the speakers disappear. All this for 99 cents and about 1/2 hour of time.
Those wanting more details can do a search for the tweak. Basically, you just find the crystal, which is a small, silver, can-like object, often oval when viewed from above, and put some Blue Tack on it. Cover it completely from bottom to top.
The John Risch sandbag tweak is supposed to be even better, but I couldn't figure out how to get a sandbag on my tiny crystal without covering half the board and risking messing something up internally. I'm not doubting it; it just didn't seem as practical in my machine.
This really worked for me and others have attested to positive results.
Good luck.
Think I'll try this tweak if I figure out the part - what I see inside is an oval shaped part with a number on top that has clear plastic sides and is about 3/8 long by 1/8 wide
I don't know, but all indications are the crystal is in a metal can-like container. That may be different for the Sony (?) SCD.If it's any help, you can check a post by badman on 3/13/02 entitled "Easy CDP tweak". Also, some replies to my post: psgary 5/26/02 "Help-Rotel 855 and blue tack tweak".
Of course, with a little luck someone who knows something will answer your post, rather than just me.
Good luck.
Check the post above by Bom asking for a picture of the crystal. The second set of pics is what mine looks like. Gee, I wish I'd read more carefully.Good luck.
I used the blu stuff to secure and cushion huge Audio Note coupling caps (wrapped in Micropore tape). Blu Tack works well and is excellent for ensuring a component stays put and it dampens a component against microphony.
I agree about the Jon Risch Tweak, I have tried mini zip lock bags, balloons and freezer bags and, due to the proximity of components around the crystal, I can't seem to get a neat fit. I also use Blu-Tack (The real stuff - c. Au$2.00) and find it fine.
Smoke me a kipper...I'll be Back for Breakfast.Cheers
