Arcam 270 cd player. I sold this and sent it across the continent. It died in transit. The seller returned the unit, and I would like to fix it without running up a large bill. The player barely powers up. The on light is just glowing, the display and controls are dead.
Lid off. No apparent damage. Remove power supply board, voltages all check ok, though I don't know the circuit values. Return power supply, but disconnect the CD transport from the main board: the display is dim but lights up.
Connect the transport, the display dims to almost nothing, but I do get a half hearted jerk from the spindle motor. (Nothing from the drawer, though)
This model has two power transformers, a small one for the output stage which runs very warm (perhaps normal) and a large one for everything else which runs cool.
If I was to guess, it is like I have a resistance in series with the power supply, which causes the voltages to droop as current is drawn.
Any jogs of he collective memory? What could be causing this? As it appears global I have accuse the power supply, but how the heck...

Hello Richard,I had a similar problem with a 6 MOhms serie resistance at the mains switch. So just the top of the cycle was actually charging the circuit.
You may try to run the hot trans. disconnected from the rest of the circuit so see if he's still hot.

Daniel Trudeau
Hi Daniel,Thank's for the tip.
The power switch is sub-ohm, and appears to be working fine.
The resistance of the primary windings (both transformers in parallel) is 345 ohms. This strikes me as very high. Any thoughts?
Richard
