Thanks for the tips--I had already reviewed most of your website, but I was hoping to avoid the DIY route...However, given the cost of the commercially made products, I may be forced to give it a try. I am leaning toward the original "quick and dirty" method of using the Owens Corning rigid panels. Are you familiar with the mineral fiber panels sold by Auralex--are these rock wool?
Also, is there any reason why I couldn't make a side wall absorbing panel using several sheets of the Owens Corning and/or the Auralex mineral fiber panels? What if I were to use a low density panel for the outermost layer (mids and highs), and higher density panels for the other layers (bass)?
Follow Ups:
Yes, this would work, it is just that it is a lot more expensive with similar performance to just lots of plain ole fiberglass. If you use a more dense panle on the inner layer (against the wall), this will help some, but there is no substitute for sheer quantity of absorbing material, density does NOT make up for lack of total amterial very much.
Depending on what panels you could get, they would need to be a total thickness of of at least 3-4" in order to do any real good.
This would be 4 panels at a 1" thickness, and at least two at 1 1/2" thickness. I would still wrap with a layer of polyester batting, and the covering of your choice. Burlap or speaker grile cloth is a lot less expensive than Aurabj,yt cloth.
