Hi,I could always add another op-amp gain stage. However, is there any way to increase the gain of the current design, maybe by changing some resistor values? Would this result in a more noisy circuit, since so much amplification is being "squeezed out" from a single opamp? I'm hesitant to experiment with this circuit, as I have no idea which resistors set the RIAA curve performance, and which ones do other things.
Thanks,
Saurav

hello, the gain is pretty high as is...are you going to build the MC section as well? the MM section should be sufficient enough for your 10x4...though a shunted volume control (think sweet whispers) at the output of the MC may allow for some flexibility with regards to future cart changes and/or matching with your passive so you don't end up listening at 9 or 5 o' clock with the volume control.

Nope, this is MM only, for now. That way I don't have to find that huge choke either :) It looks like I should be fine, so I ordered the parts, now let's see how it turns out.On a side note, I replaced the opamps in my CD player with the OPAs - it sounds pretty sweet.
That preamp is already higher than normal gain.Kurt
Thanks. I wasn't sure what its gain numbers were, and I don't really know how much I will need, so I was exploring the possibility.Dynavector 10x4, 2.5mV output
ASL Waves, 500mV input sensitivityHow much gain do I need to be able to run the autoformer reasonably below 1:1? If I assume I need 2V output from my phono stage (since my CD player works fine), that's a gain of around 800. I thought I saw a post from Thorsten saying it had a gain of 120, which is why I was concerned. However, 800 is less than 30 dB, and his web page says that 45 - 50 dB gain was one of the design requirements, so I'm probably fine.
Hey Saurav:Both Chiggy and I have built this phono stage. We differed from Thorsten's parts suggestions to get high quality parts that are more easily sourced here in the US. Let me tell you that I used a Radio Shack Little Rat before this and the El Cheapo just blows it away. Send me an email if you want to discuss the project. I boxed mine and added a battery monitor circuit and charging circuit to make it more finished.
