Just a guess here but it sounds like maybe the mute circuit it coming on and cutting off the output. You could test this by seeing if there is output from the tape output when this happens next. If so, them its after the volume control and that only leaves the gain stage and or buffer and muting. Also, see if DC is going away from any of these stages (gain or buffer). Good Luck, bobwire
