IS it true that putting a sock firmly in the rear facing ports on my Wharfedale EM95 floorstanders will reduce the "boom"????????????
Please email me as I don't think i will find this page again.

Phil,This sort of thing can make a difference. Also try sponge foam and experiment with its density. If you're more daring, try extending your port tube's length inside the speaker, perhaps using plumber's PVC pipe. It might help and give deeper, less prominent bass as well. Room tuning like this proves it's unrealistic to expect any speaker to work well in every room.
Other ideas:
Your speakers should not be in a corner or too close to a wall. Try pulling them out, right into the room, then listen. I realise this can create domestic unrest, but for the sake of experimenting with bass I suspect room proximity will be most influential factor. If your room is square or has a springy timber floor, sometimes there's no way of eradicating boom and having powerful bass.
I know a few people with different Wharfdales and they tend to be a bit of a rock and roll speaker which is shy i'd look closely at port length and port/box stuffing. Stands might help, or spikes if they're floorstanders (I don't know the model). Low stands (8-10 inches) under a floorstander can tighten tubby bass. Try some bricks and see if it helps.
Make your speaker cables as short as possible. This helped solve my problems in the lower frequencies.
The other big help was moving house.

Jack
