Hi,I currently considering the DACT attenuator to replace the Alps in my preamp. The local dealer of the DACT is giving me a good price for the DACT. However I spoke to one of my friend who has used a DACT before and his comments were very transparent, detailed but can sound bright. I would appreciate feedback from DACT owners if the DACT really sound bright. I'm sensitive to bright sounding components otherwise I'm pretty much sold on the DACT attenuator.
Best Regards,
Bill

I'll be trying out the DACT :-))Best Regards,

Hi Bill,I don't have a DACT but I use Shallco switches with Holco H8 resistors in a true ladder configuration. I agree with the comments made by other inmates.
When swapping from cermet potentiometers to such attenuators, you will have the impression that a screen is suddenly removed from the picture. You will hear sounds you have never heard before; the stereo image will become very accurate, pinpoint 3D imaging as some would say; the dynamics will be better than ever; bass will get tighter as well; you will have a substantial gain in ambiance.
On the other hand, it might unveil weaknesses you were previously unaware of. Should you listen to a poor recording, you will know it for sure...
At first, it will be a shock. You might perceive this "clean" sound as brightness. As your ears will get used to it, you will then realize that you simply hear more music! This is probably THE most significant upgrade you can achieve with a single modification.
Enjoy! rg
I just got a DACT and TG is right how did I live with a crappy pot for so long? They are clear and fast - which is what you want from a pot. I found after I put the DACT in my system I had to make few small adjustments to the position of my speakers and did some tube rolling to get the best from the DACT.If your system sounds bright after you get the DACT - don't blame the DACT it just letting you hear a problem in your system. check you cables etc.
Finding problems is a good thing, fix them and you can move up to the next level....
Cheers,
Anthony
... but in reality you're hearing the signal without the soup of distortion you've become used to hearing.Try this simple experiment. Make a minimalist passive preamp with a DACT attenuator (or any good stepped attenuator for that matter) and use it for a week or two. Get used to it, even if you think it sounds bright at first.
Now replace the DACT with a carbon pot.
Yuk. Be amazed you used cheap volume pots for so long.
Cheers
TG
The DACT attenuator makes beautiful highs as it passes on a big part of the harmonic envelope of the treble part of notes that most commercial pots as well as discrete resistor attenuators kill or glaze over. The same transparency makes the DACT very revealing of the shortcomings of the electronics and speakers (and yes, even cables, power cords and power line conditioners) that are a part of its system. Let me guess. You're friend got ss stuff right? :)
Hm. I suppose it depends on what you compare it to... I find it to be clean and transparent... I suspect that your friend's comments are more about the rest of his system than the DACT... but I could be wrong, anyone else?
