http://www.geocities.com/diyproac25If this is a good copy of the 4500$ ProAc 2.5 I am going to build myself a pair. Can you experienced DIY guys find any weakness in this description???? I could build a pair of theese speakers för about 700 $ (in Sweden), the work is a hobby. Is there any reason why I should´nt do this???
Thanks.
Follow Ups:
Hey guys,Al.M and others have been discussing the ProAc 2.5 clone over at Madisound board for a few days. Consenses is that this clone is about a much bang for the $$$ as you could ever get.
We also talked about the 3.8 clone. But no-one can locate a design/xover/etc for it, thus we only sit and dream.
See link for the start of the thread.
I am looking for plans and sepc'c for a DIY 3.8..can anyone helpe me out?thanks, jb
Nice-looking plan....it may get you most of the way there, but realize that ProAc does not use off-the-shelf Scan-Speak drivers to get the "ProAc sound".....they are modified, proprietary designs.
If ScanSpeak is like 99% of the other OEM suppliers (read: all) then most of their "proprietary" design modifications consist of a custom face plate, or at best some extra damping/padding/vent. All *off-the-shelf* items they supply in quantity orders. My favorite is MB Quart's "flagship" speaker w/ proprietary tweeter. They substituted a plastic! tweeter faceplate (w/ big *MB* emblem) for the stock alum. faceplate.PS
You are right buddy. Same goes for Sonus Faber. They did their magic touch to Scanspeak drivers and then you will have the SF sound.
Home built speakers are awsome and can save you 80%. Check out Zalytron among others.
and did you like the way it sounded? If so, why not build it if you have the skills. Are there design weaknesses? If the target is to copy the ProAc, I don't have an idea as I have not seen the xover for the 2.5. If the target is to build a floorstander using Scan Speak drivers, then I don't think there are many weaknesses. Use the hints/tips Al M supplies and you can do quite well.
For me I don't find the 8513 tweeter all that great and is no match for the 8545 that might be a tempting choice to use instead of the 8535 (8535 is what is used). The 9000 series is a far superior performing unit. Tons of xovers available.
Still the answer to your question is, the project appears to be a solid design, good details and not too exotic of a xover that should be easy to tune to your liking.
> > Tons of xovers available < <Do you know where I can find XO's for 8545 + 9000, for substituting the 8513 + 8535 in the 2.5 clone?
